I'm starting to hate Vista more and more each day...

I think you need to wipe the drive and do a fresh install.

check BIOS and update it.

memtest, CPU test and HD test

core2 comp with gigs of RAM should run the system fine.

it's not vista, it's your computer.

Yeah, not trying to be rude, but there's no reason why that wasn't flying with Vista.

I think the main issue is the garbage HP loads on them.
There is a TON of crap they load onto them which bogs them down bigtime.

A good example of this would be the HP Q6600 w/ 3 GB of RAM @ werk.
It boots up slower than my old notebook with a Pentium M 1.86 GHz w/ 1 GB RAM & a 4200 RPM HDD at home...

I'm not sure if you can "acquire" a clean version of Vista Premium & then use that on the HP...just don't know about how exactly you'd get the key.
Well, i have ideas for that, but they involve slightly less than legit applications.

Which is really dumb actually, since you should be able to install a clean version of Vista, as you'd likely be amazed at the difference.
The version of vista that came with the laptop was home basic so I'd not want to use it anyways. When I get the urge, I'll buy a retail copy of Vista HP and give that a try. This'll probably occur after SP1 hits. But at this point I don't regret my decision at all. I don't miss HP Quickplay and I like XP Pro. My computer runs exactly as I'd hoped it would when I bought it.

It's not my computer, it's the damn M$ who wants signed driver cash.
Everything was working just fine 2 weeks ago, prior to a bunch of MS updates installed.

MS doesn't require the signed driver 'to get cash'; crap drivers are the no.1 reason for system instability; the requirement is precisely to protect the user from crap unsigned drivers.

This is also to force developers to start cranking out 64-bit drivers, because to get a driver signed, a manufacturer needs to provide both 32-bit and 64-bit drivers.

While some of you may feel the driver signing requirement is a PITA, it has nothing to do with 'paying MS' for signing but rather paying Verisign or Thawte for a publisher cert. This requirement is to keep a good majority of the various root kits floating around from being able to completely own you, at least without some really stupid steps by the end user to circumvent it. It's a *huge* security win and we just need some of the smaller vendors to pony up and get signed and call it a day.

It's like UAC...it may seem like a PITA, but from a security standpoint, it's great.

Just a quick update... My laptop had been running smooth as silk for about a week. Finally got it to speed up quite a bit by dumping Kaspersky and switching to Antivir.

Tonight I login and my integrated fingerprint reader has stopped working. "Please connect fingerprint reader" at the login screen, kinda hard to connect it when its built into my screen.

Log into windows, check for a Windows Update (maybe something was released to fix this), Vista says it needs to restart my computer to install an update to windows update. No prob, restart, go back into windows, and it says the same thing again, needs to restart to install an update to windows update. Over and over and over, i rebooted about 4 times.

Finally, i click no to the reboot and vista yells that some programs crashed, sure enough, the windows modules installer was crashing. At the window it shows "WINDOWS_WCP_AI_FAILURE2" is the problem for 4 different instances and it wants to send 50 (yes, FIFTY), crash reports to MSFT.

What the HELL is going on with this?

My laptop came from HP with Vista Basic pre-installed on it and it was:

1. SLOOOOOOOOOOOOWWWWWWWWWWWWW
2. Unreliable. I had the Vista equiv. of a BSOD within an hour of running it!!!

So I wiped the drive. The whole thing. C: D: and even the space needed by Quickplay. And I put WinXP Pro on it instead. Wow, the computer is fast, responsive, and stable now.

Vista ftl.

ps - I beta tested vista and never liked it. I did like WinXP in beta and later and hopefully I'll like the next version of Windows also.

what model you have with HP? my HP with Vista Home Premium runs like Leopard!
It's a DV6000T. Specs:

T7200
2GB PC5300
Geforce Go 7400
WXGA+ w/ Brightview
Conexant HD Audio
DVD-R/W
120GB SATA HDD
3945 A/B/G
Bluetooth

I guess that's about all I can remember about it. Should be fine for Vista, but the way it came from HP was totally unacceptable. After I gathered up all the XP drivers I needed, I put my own copy of WinXP Pro on it and the computer is smoking. I'd have bought it with XP if HP offered it as a configurable option.

The "slowness" was caused by the HP junk. My DV6000T was the same but after a fresh install of Vista without any craplets it flies.

We all known you're having a wonderful time, stop whining.

Have you checked the event log to see if there are any useful entries? Perhaps the AV stuff combined with user tinkering mucked up the system?

The problem is a lot of Vista users including myself find Vista faster then XP with decent hardware,so something is wrong somewhere if you find it slow,my XP only gets used now for updates,Vista is so much better in a lot of areas, memory handling, security, bootup etc...

You could not pay me to go back to XP,well you could if you throw in a copy of Vista 😉.

I think I have every right to bitch, this operating system sucks. First off none of my tweaks involved any major processes, i simply removed turned off some features I didn't need/use/want. Also, If removing one AV and installing another causes this many problems, something obviously isn't right. Never had problems like this in XP.

In regards to your second comment/question: event log shows numerous errors with 'Windows Servicing" - Specifically things like "Windows Servicing failed to complete the process of setting package WUClient-SelfUpdate-Core~31bf3856ad364e35~x86~~7.0.6000.381 () into Staged(Staged) state" and the like, about 15-20 everytime i start the computer. Looks to me like an update failed and f-ed everything up.

EDIT: I'm just gonna reformat and reinstall, sick of tinkering with this crap.

You do ,but I think he was trying to say do we need another Vista bitch thread, you get a lot more positive replies in posting your problem in a helpful manner/title rather then bitching about it.

Oh I uninstalled my AV and tried another AV and had no problems, think I have changed my AV 4 times now .

Avast to Kaspersky 6,then upgraded to Kaspersky 7 via uninstall of old one, then back again to Avast.

Reason why I uninstalled Kaspersky was because of slow web browsing of a few sites like Anandtech forums etc.. there is a thread on the subject in Security forum or was.

some things I feel safe about vista, but most of it does not impress me, the fact that you need loads of RAM just for the OS to run faster.

Win XP can run on 512 with the right settings and still have 256 left over. For crying out loud, a gig is just breaking the barrier for minimum.

thing that sucks about vista is software compatibility.

After SP1 comes out I may try it out again, but I'll be buying Home Premium Retail and not using the Home Basic that came with the machine. But in the meantime, I'm very happy with XP Pro. I'm familiar with how it works and it's fast enough for me.

Yeah, I feel the same way.

My XP partiton looks better and runs better than my Vista partition on my test rig.
Personally I think Aero sucks balls, so thats first to go,and the ammount of crap on Vista I don't want or need is astounding!

There really should be a way of uninstalling all the rubbish i don't want tbh. :| I mean really uninstall and not just hide.

It took twice as long to lock down the Vista rig to my liking than it does on XP, and its scary just how many times my firewall has popped up with the OS trying to access the internet for no apparent reason in some way or other.

I can't see any reason whatsoever to change to Vista on my main rig right now, and only the fact I'll need to support Vista in my job eventually, makes me have to use it.
