I'm starting to hate Vista more and more each day...

I just don't get it, i've tried tweaks, uninstalling programs, checking startup items, disabling features, but no matter what I do my new laptop just never feels speedy, takes a year to boot, and its just sluggish. It honestly even feels slower than my old T41 1.6ghz centrino, a nearly 4 year old system.

I have pretty much all the stock lenovo software uninstalled except for the bare minimum, I have turned off all the Aero features (using the win 2k look right now), i cleaned out my startup apps, but nothing seems to make any big differences. My laptop takes a good 4-5 minutes to boot and be ready to go without any remaining hd/cpu activity, sometimes even longer (its been as high as 10 minutes). I load up 'Reliability & Performance Monitor' and it seems everytime its something else slowing the system down. I just don't get it. Even once all is booted and ready to go, it just dosen't feel fast.

X60 Tablet
1.5ghz Core 2 Duo LV (7400)
2gb RAM
Vista Business
Kaspersky AV (but it was just as slow without kaspersky)

you can try the 2 latest updates Linked off Here and see if that helps, one is for performance and the other is for compatibly... been seen where its help some and others didn't make a differance

My new Lenovo works pretty well with Vista Home Premium. I had some major issues getting rid of some of the add on packages, but now that that's straight Vista is working very well for me. I think our specs are pretty close.

dual core Pentium T2060 1.6ghz
2gb ram
5400rpm hd
integrated gfx

One thing you could try is to plug it in, then just let it idle there for a day or so. Let it do it's indexing, and house keeping. That might help.

well im pretty sure its not the indexer, i've had the laptop for almost two months and its spent a few days here and there on for 48-72 hours straight.

installing those updates now, hoping it will speed up.

I don't know what, but something is wrong.

I run Ultimate just fine on my notebook, & my notebook is an old Centrino (Pentium M) @ 1.86 GHz w/ 1 GB RAM & a blistering fast 4200 RPM HDD.

So again, something's wrong in your situation...i just can't say what.

Have you tried reinstalling teh OS?
I don't know what else to suggest...
Chipsets drivers?

Strange...I bought new lappy last week with Vista Home Premium installed and it makes really snappy I was like...wow that is fast than windows XP Pro on my PC (AMD Althon 64 X2 4800+)
Right now I am working on removing unwanted add on that was pre-installed by HP and hope to keep faster.

Maybe it just needs a fresh reinstall.

My 2 year old Pentium-M 2.26/1gb/x300 Dell laptop runs like a bat outta hell with Vista - Just like it does with XP.

My laptop came from HP with Vista Basic pre-installed on it and it was:

1. SLOOOOOOOOOOOOWWWWWWWWWWWWW
2. Unreliable. I had the Vista equiv. of a BSOD within an hour of running it!!!

So I wiped the drive. The whole thing. C: D: and even the space needed by Quickplay. And I put WinXP Pro on it instead. Wow, the computer is fast, responsive, and stable now.

Vista ftl.

ps - I beta tested vista and never liked it. I did like WinXP in beta and later and hopefully I'll like the next version of Windows also.

I like Vista so far after 2 weeks for basic applications, but ALL of my games are giving me fits. Call of Duty 2, HL2, Enemy Territory, CoH ... all of them under my gaming setup have been problematic.

Try running those games in XP sp2 compatibility mode and check for the latest drivers for your graphics. If you have only a gig of memory you might want to consider getting more ram.

You might want to check into any updated drivers, or other issues. CoD2, HL2, and CoH are some games that the vast majority of people have absolutely no issues running. CoD2 played fine for me with some of the very first Nvidia drivers out. What are the problems you are having?

if rebooting is the biggest gripe...

there is this cool new thing called "suspend" and "hibernate". I use them, and I only reboot every couple of weeks.

There must be something wrong. Mine is running flawlessly with exception of an occasional crash which I believe is related to my SoundMax driver and not Vista. My hardware is pretty good for a gaming machine but it is not by any means cutting edge. I will say that leaving most of the settings in Vista at default and letting it do its thing for about two weeks helped out tremendously which I believe is mostly related to Superfetch "learning" what tasks I like to perform and when I like to perform them.

Make sure you are completely up to date with drivers and put your settings back to default. Try running off of that for a couple weeks and see if there is any difference.

Now with all the latest Vista updates/patches installed....

1) Coretemp quits reading (not big of a deal)

2) RivaTuner is completely hosed...Now that pisses me off, big time.

What next?

How much more $$$ M$ wants from us?

Tried compatibility mode for CoD2 ... my mistake was skipping the DX9 installer .. I thought 'Screw that, it will overwrite DX10' and canceled the installer. What I should have done was answered yes and let it skip the DX9 install by itself. It starts then goes to a renderer not found console screen. Next up, HL2 works OK, but the Video Performance Test has crashed every time I tried it. Using the 166.xx drivers dated 7/6/2007 as well. I could roll back to older Vista WHQL drivers if necessary. I next found my Realtek 888 onboard audio driver was crashing CoH when used in conjunction with a trainer I play the game with (yes, the trainer was run as admin as well). Enemy Territory was a PunkBuster web updater that I had to run in admin mode as well .. just things that were a no-brainer in XP but in Vista, you have to do your homework for almost every gae, especially my older ones, to be sure.

Coretemp & Rivatuner are hosed because neither of their makers will pay for a driver signature that Vista x64 requires, largely for good security reasons.
Not saying i necessarily agree with the inability to really turn off that "security feature", but that's why.

Because of that, the only way to run them is by disabling driver signing.

If you installed the "Compatibility" patch (KB938979), you can uninstall it via "Add/Remove" & then you can disable driver signing again to get those programs to function again.

Disabling Vista x64 Driver Signing
Type cmd in the search bar.
Hit Ctrl + Shift + Enter to open a command prompt window with admin privileges or right click & select Run as Administrator.
In the command prompt window, enter: bcdedit /set loadoptions DDISABLE_INTEGRITY_CHECKS
Reboot.

Updates didn't help, just as slow as before... I am gonna do a fresh install tomm, but from what ive read, didn't help for many.

Have you actually tried or done this and it worked?
I did previously uninstall the KB938979 and RivaTuner still hoses.

It's a DV6000T. Specs:

T7200
2GB PC5300
Geforce Go 7400
WXGA+ w/ Brightview
Conexant HD Audio
DVD-R/W
120GB SATA HDD
3945 A/B/G
Bluetooth

I guess that's about all I can remember about it. Should be fine for Vista, but the way it came from HP was totally unacceptable. After I gathered up all the XP drivers I needed, I put my own copy of WinXP Pro on it and the computer is smoking. I'd have bought it with XP if HP offered it as a configurable option.

Yes.

I installed both the Performance/Compatibility/Reliability updates a couple weeks ago or whenever it was they came out, & then i realized driver signing was on again, since CoreTemp & Rivatuner were not functional for me.

Since that just doesn't work for me, i followed the suggestion of helpful member Aflac in another thread, as he stated that was the update that broke the ability to disable driver signing.

So i uninstalled that, & w00t, i could get Rivatuner & Core Temp working again when doing the ddisable thing again.

So in short, yes.

Yeah, not trying to be rude, but there's no reason why that wasn't flying with Vista.

I think the main issue is the garbage HP loads on them.
There is a TON of crap they load onto them which bogs them down bigtime.

A good example of this would be the HP Q6600 w/ 3 GB of RAM @ werk.
It boots up slower than my old notebook with a Pentium M 1.86 GHz w/ 1 GB RAM & a 4200 RPM HDD at home...

I'm not sure if you can "acquire" a clean version of Vista Premium & then use that on the HP...just don't know about how exactly you'd get the key.
Well, i have ideas for that, but they involve slightly less than legit applications.

Which is really dumb actually, since you should be able to install a clean version of Vista, as you'd likely be amazed at the difference.

It's a NO GO for me.
I've tried at least twice to weed out errors to no prevail.
So it must be a YMMV??
