I'm starting a garden and a vegatable patch. What's a good resource/guide for this kind of information?

btw, i live in atlanta, ga, am planting roses, gladiolies, green onions, tomatos, chives, and watermelons.

All them plants should do fine in your area, but do not plant the roses with the rest of your plants. (Roses like to be slightly acidic soil, while the others strive in neutral soil.)

The best bet is to talk to a gardener at the local garden centre for information, because they know what strive in your area & what to avoid and what to use to prevent bugs & deases.
