HAL a possibility?

I thought this was interesting, but also worried me in some ways.

<< "We can have a personal assistant, a slave, a friend who doesn't really suffer by being delegated these tasks," he said. >>

If this is the motive of a scientist, to create SLAVES, then the project needs to be canned right now.

How does the ATOT crowd feel about this. Is it OK if we create a robotic race that can feel and learn, but are delegated to a life a of slavery?

They're robots, hell yeah it's ok for them to be slaves, THEY'RE NOT REAL.

Personally i'd like to have a robot boxer that I could kick the sh!t out of, and it would feel the pain and stuff. And I could have it on settings like "Homer Simpson" (stand there and take your knocks) Or "Mike Tyson" (Fights dirty). :D Man that is my dream.

hmm, what do u mean by "not real"?

So, lets say that GOD made us, if he wanted to kill every one of us, then its OK by your reasoning because we are "not real" right?

hmmm...

Its a robot. We should worry about the ethical treatment of humans before we concern ourselves with machines.

How does that have relevance to a man made robot?

Ever hear the story of Noah and the flood?

If you believe in God that is...don't want this to get into a religious debate :)

Hey mustang, I made a wood carving of a face the other day. I am that wood carving faces GOD. Will it feel pain if I throw it in the fire?

The main (and probably the most important) difference between humans and androids is that the human consists of a soul, not just mechanical parts.

Do you kiss your computer good night when you go to bed? I think that's what he means with "not real".

For me, any empathy that I may feel towards a "robotic race" would easily be forgotten by reminding myself that it's a machine--it may think, but feel?

When I was watching the movie AI, I just could NOT feel any sympathy for David--whenever I started to feel bad for him, I remembered that he was a machine. Are synthetic feelings any less than our own "genuine" human feelings? For now, yes, I think they are.

Of course, it is easy to remain distant and cold by a situation/reality one has never been apart of or experience directly--I'm sure my feelings would change in one way or another when the future becomes closer than it is.

Without getting into any theological debates here...prove that we have a soul. As far as I know, we can't "prove it". So if we keep religion out of it, what then would be the difference between a truly thinking machine and a human or other sentient creature that feels?

A true AI which has consciousness is of a higher intelligence than a Human, because it can think 'faster' and with additional components, like some kind of solid-state memory, it can remember even the smallest details, no matter how long ago it happened. Depending on their body, they can have ultra-fast reflexes.

In short, they'll surpass Humans in all areas (except stupidity ;) ).

The difference? They can evolve much faster than Humans can.

I guess it all depends on the level of consciousness the robot will have. If it gets smart enough to think for itself, then i dont think we should create them to be slaves.

The consept of robots that can "feel" has one major flaw. Computers work on math and logic, emotions don't.

That's probably not a good question to ask in this forum. You'll probably get a different answer than if you were somewhere else...

That's why I always refer to current forms of AI as 'smart' programs.

True AI will work much like our brains and will thus know emotions, like curiosity, grief, sadness etc.

No using the movie AI as a refrence, IMHO that movie sucked. A better example of AI is Data, in Star Trek.

The moral delimea is we can create robots that don't need to think or learn to do our lowly tasks. Why make learning adaptive machines to do our sh!t work?

Also, does the creation of a truely independant self thinking AI pose a danger to humanity? Could a Terminator style Skynet be developed? Where should we limit or curb the advancement of artificial intelligence?

Agreed.

That's a major flaw in the reasoning of many people. Androids based on true AI will be our equals or superiors.

<< Also, does the creation of a truely independant self thinking AI pose a danger to humanity? Could a Terminator style Skynet be developed? Where should we limit or curb the advancement of artificial intelligence? >>

It's unstoppable. We can't change anything about it. If those androids want to exterminate all Humans, they'll succeed. If they want to live among us as our equals, they'll succeed. If they want us to be their slaves, they'll succeed.

The only way to 'control' this process is to stop every kind of research regarding AI.

PS: once the first true AI is developed, we should not make it or its successors think that all Humans are a**h***s, or they might want to get rid of us ;)

Yes. We already have these. They are called cars and coffee makers. As long as the robot has no consciousness or real feelings or anything of that nature I have no problem with it.

Cars and coffee makers have feelings and can learn? Wow, I never knew that...
