I'm sorry but mainstream Linux distro's (Mandrake Red Hat and so on) are becoming more and more useless by each release.

Ya know, one of the primary reasons I started using Linux was the freedom to set up & use my computer as I see fit. But now Bing informs me that I'm doing it all wrong because I like RedHat & KDE, and don't mind using a GUI interface once in awhile.

As for the original poster's statement on stability ... I don't know where you're coming from. I exclusively run Redhat 8 @ work & RedHat 9 @ home.I don't see any difference ... if anything stability has improved from the most unstable RH release in my opinion (5.*, 7.0).

Well, I don't like RedHat much, but I do like KDE, and I fail to see how using it makes me less of a Linux user.
Ruins some of the 31337 feel I guess, but I can live with that.

If I had a P2 with 128 Mb of RAM, I'd use XFCE instead, but Im fortunate enough to have a box powerful enough to run KDE, and since I like it, why shouldn't I?
Heck, the dude sitting next to me at work is a real old timer, used to work with Solaris(well, SunOS:)) before Linux left Linus' dorm room, and he runs KDE 1.x on a SPARC Station 5 with Solaris 7.

My main reason for not liking RedHat is RPM he**, but it's no more or less Linux than Slack or Debian is.

I'm going to try and point out the stupidity in most threads like this by replying to this as a normal user.

I'm tired of the pointless "my <insert name of some stupid program/OS/system/game/piece of hardware> is better than yours" debates right now. Some Windows user decides that since he doesn't have any friends he needs to come on a board and rile up some silly Linux users, because, you know, Tux is gay (not that there is anything wrong with that). And of course we fall for it. Hook, line, and sinker. The same arguments, over and over. "Its hard to use!" "The cli is more powerful!" "It looks like Windows!" "Its more stable!" "But with Windoze 2000, you don't need Linux!" "You're running FAT32 aren't ya?" "Uhhhh, so, its better for my gamez!" "Lamer." "Geek!" "I'm tired of typing, I want a point and click, pretty color, I feel like a hippy licking toads for the sexual excitement it provides interface" "My mouse is too far away, I'll just type." "Dude, check out this pr0n" "wget 0wnz all other pr0n collection methods!" "nuh uh" "uh huh" Where am I? Oh... Not again... You won't like me when I'm angry.

Anyhow, I lost my sanity this morning. So I am kinda wandering and a little scared. Everytime the CEO walks by she looks at me funny. I guess I should stop sucking my thumb. Or maybe it is because I am stabbing a Windows 2003 cdrom with a spork. I dunno.

Actually I am running RH9 & 8 at the house and work. I find that I do a lot of stuff from the CLI but some from the GUI also. I don't think that there is any great instability issues but I only install what I want and not a lot else. Then I install synaptic and apt4rpm and use that to do the package management. Keeps me out of dep hell (for the most part) and will let me/tell me to fix broken packages. I agree with n0c on the "I am tired of the debates and stupid questions that are REALLY starting to pop up all over AT. I think a search function should be the first thing that a newbie to the board should have to show a competency in prior to being able to post to certian forums.

<medadvice>
must get n0c to a bar quickly.... Keep him away from the following:

Windows Users
Sporks
Windows CD
Newbie Linux users

Apply liberal amounts of alcohol in rapid succession until stress fades. If necessary give him a clue bat and identify a nearby tree as a windows user/newbie linux user and let him go to it.

Ok, just read the thread title again
rolleye.gif

Just one simple question for the original poster ... please name some things that you could do with previous releases of RedHat or Mandrake that you can't do with current releases.

I'll help you a bit ... I think linuxconf got dropped somewhere around 8.0 ... it was kind of nice, but no great loss IMO.

There is a certain balance that has to kept between security, flexibility, and usability. Some distros (debian, BSDs, slackware, etc) have achieved that balance, while others like mandrake and red hat are still stumbling after the goal of creating a *windows-like* experience for the home user, while still trying to be viable for other enviroments. I pretty much agree with everyhing thats been said in this thread. Linux is a different animal from windows. Most attempts to make one more like the other just don't work right. Eventually, though, mandrake and redhat will finally get it right. Until that time there are plenty of other distros to play with :)

The BSDs are not distros. They are operating systems.

Technicalities, technicalities, technicalities. I know that, but I didn't feel like pointing it out, because I was hoping that most people here would be able to figure that out.

No, but it is wrong of you to keep so many bloody quotes. :D

This is just someone posting their opinion, if you don't like these kinds of threads, and didn't come here to agree/disagree, then don't bother with them. It'll save you a lot of hassle. I replied in this thread because I disagreed with the poster's viewpoint, and the poster was obviously looking for point-counterpoint discussion because they bothered to post their opinion to a public forum.

In a general sense, yes, that might look like naivete, but in this specific context, I don't think it is. The poster hasn't been a troll, so what I said holds true...

Even still, what I said stands. Why do you bother with these threads if you just end up complaining about them? Not really worth your time now is it? :)

You must be bored to think that this has turned into a flame war. If you want flame wars try posting this in off topic

Oh and BTW, what does usenet have to do with this?
