Ya know, one of the primary reasons I started using Linux was the freedom to set up & use my computer as I see fit. But now Bing informs me that I'm doing it all wrong because I like RedHat & KDE, and don't mind using a GUI interface once in awhile.![]()
As for the original poster's statement on stability ... I don't know where you're coming from. I exclusively run Redhat 8 @ work & RedHat 9 @ home.I don't see any difference ... if anything stability has improved from the most unstable RH release in my opinion (5.*, 7.0).

Well, I don't like RedHat much, but I do like KDE, and I fail to see how using it makes me less of a Linux user.
Ruins some of the 31337 feel I guess, but I can live with that.
If I had a P2 with 128 Mb of RAM, I'd use XFCE instead, but Im fortunate enough to have a box powerful enough to run KDE, and since I like it, why shouldn't I?
Heck, the dude sitting next to me at work is a real old timer, used to work with Solaris(well, SunOS) before Linux left Linus' dorm room, and he runs KDE 1.x on a SPARC Station 5 with Solaris 7.
My main reason for not liking RedHat is RPM he**, but it's no more or less Linux than Slack or Debian is.

Keeps me out of dep hell (for the most part) and will let me/tell me to fix broken packages. I agree with n0c on the "I am tired of the debates and stupid questions that are REALLY starting to pop up all over AT. I think a search function should be the first thing that a newbie to the board should have to show a competency in prior to being able to post to certian forums.

must get n0c to a bar quickly.... Keep him away from the following:
Windows Users
Sporks
Windows CD
Newbie Linux users
Apply liberal amounts of alcohol in rapid succession until stress fades. If necessary give him a clue bat and identify a nearby tree as a windows user/newbie linux user and let him go to it.

Bah, this is all old news to me. Red hat and madrake started going down hill ever since they first started transforming into *desktop OSs*. There is a certain balance that has to kept between security, flexibility, and usability. Some distros (debian, BSDs, slackware, etc) have achieved that balance, while others like mandrake and red hat are still stumbling after the goal of creating a *windows-like* experience for the home user, while still trying to be viable for other enviroments. I pretty much agree with everyhing thats been said in this thread. Linux is a different animal from windows. Most attempts to make one more like the other just don't work right. Eventually, though, mandrake and redhat will finally get it right. Until that time there are plenty of other distros to play with![]()
The BSDs are not distros. They are operating systems.

If you can't take the heat get outta the fire, if you're getting tired of threads like these then ignore them. Personally I think that you should lay of the politics and news forum for a little while
Oh and BTW, it doesn't take a PhD to spout of brainless nonsense, unless its a philosophy degree![]()

Is it so wrong to try and elevate the discussion past the same crap threads I have seen since I first signed up?
No, but it is wrong of you to keep so many bloody quotes.Originally posted by: n0cmonkey

the poster was obviously looking for point-counterpoint discussion because they bothered to post their opinion to a public forum.

This is just someone posting their opinion, if you don't like these kinds of threads, and didn't come here to agree/disagree, then don't bother with them. It'll save you a lot of hassle. I replied in this thread because I disagreed with the poster's viewpoint, and the poster was obviously looking for point-counterpoint discussion because they bothered to post their opinion to a public forum.
In a general sense, yes, that might look like naivete, but in this specific context, I don't think it is. The poster hasn't been a troll, so what I said holds true...Originally posted by: n0cmonkey

Even still, what I said stands. Why do you bother with these threads if you just end up complaining about them? Not really worth your time now is it?![]()
