I'm sorry, but a person is not worth $200 million+ to play a sport

Dear god, the entertainment industry is going to crap while the rest of is suffer? I am referring obviously to baseball's blockbuster deal. I don't care how good at a sport you are, you shouldn't be getting that kind of money, let alone to play a game where you take steriods to swing a stick at a little ball and trot down some dirt paved lines. IMHO same goes for all entertainers (that includes music, movies and sports).

WTF? I can do the same thing these people do and would probably be happy doing it for free (or on the cheap if I had to make a living off it).

When am I going to get paid $200 million to sit on my butt drinking a  and eating some chips watching these idiots?

a person is "worth" whatever someone else is willing to pay for their services. if people wanted to pay $1000 to read retarded posts like yours, you'd be a frickin millionaire too.

All these industries you listed are able to sustain these types of expenses (be it a sports athlete or an actor or a singer) and still remain very profitable.

You're more than welcome to go and claim your share.

The services that you have to offer are just not valued by the majority as something worth paying for (either in time or money). So therefore you don't get $200 million to sit on your butt drinking a  and eating some chips. When you have a quality that is worth watching and paying money for, then that will be a different case.

if the people stop watching baseball and paying these high ticket prices, then this problem would not exist.

I can happily say that I am actually contributing towards something like that.

You can?

Sure I can. I can take steroids just like the best of em (but I choose not to currently). I can swing a bat. I can occasionally hit a ball with it. I can throw and catch said ball. I can run around. Why haven't the Yankee's called me to make such an offer yet?

It is this very industry that makes everyone else's life so expensive. Read: inflation.

Clearly they are worth that much or they would not be getting paid that much. In a capitalist system, something or someone is "worth" exactly how much others are willing to pay. It's that simple, there is no other value in anything.

That being said, I think the better question is why our society values sports and entertainment to the point where actors and athletes can make so much money? They contribute virtually nothing productive to the world, and yet they are among the best paid. Not that I don't like movies and sports, but it's something to think about...

Don't worry, our progressive tax system will make sure he gets paid less.

OH WAIT, Bush gave the Billionaire's Club huge tax breaks. No wonder our National Debt has just crossed the $7 trillion mark two weeks ago.

Leave no billionaire behind.

So why aren't you? I can program just like Linus and start a business venture just like Anand. Where is my Ferarri and the God like status?

The point is, he can bring in the revenue by himself... so $200mil isn't proposterous for 1 player. But you know what ? If he cut his own salary for the good of the cap / competitiveness, then I'd respect him 10x more. That's a reason I think they can go to hell with their ridiculous salaries... it's not because they haven't earned it, it's because they always just want more.

Right. So are you implying that all successful baseball players take steroids?

No one forces people to buy $100 logo jackets or insanely-priced season tickets. If fans want to pay ridiculous amounts of money for their pastime it's no more or less idiotic than any other hobby.

And to quote Danny Elfman:

There?s nothing wrong with capitalism
There?s nothing wrong with free enterprise
Don?t try to make me feel guilty
I?m so tired of hearing you cry

There?s nothing wrong with making some profit
If you ask me I?ll say it?s just fine
There?s nothing wrong with wanting to live nice
I?m so tired of hearing you whine
About the revolution
Bringin? down the rich
When was the last time you dug a ditch, baby!

If it ain?t one thing
Then it?s the other
Any cause that crosses your path
Your heart bleeds for anyone?s brother
I?ve got to tell you you?re a pain in the ass

You criticize with plenty of vigor
You rationalize everything that you do
With catchy phrases and heavy quotations
And everybody is crazy but you

You?re just a middle class, socialist brat
From a suburban family and you never really had to work
And you tell me that we?ve got to get back
To the struggling masses (whoever they are)
You talk, talk, talk about suffering and pain
Your mouth is bigger than your entire brain
What the hell do you know about suffering and pain . . .

(repeat first verse)

(repeat chorus)

There?s nothing wrong with capitalism
There?s nothing wrong with capitalism
There?s nothing wrong with capitalism
There?s nothing wrong with capitalism

No - just the ones that get jiggazillion bucks to play. :D

And as to our capitalist society and economy - things are NOT worth exactly what others are willing to pay. The literal translation yes - however, our economy is driven by inflation - the idea that someone wants more than what they're worth, so they inflate their price, resetting the par price for everything else arbitrarily in the process, making my money worth less meaning I have to demand more. It's a never ending cycle.

Jealousy?

People are worth whatever someone else is willing to pay for their services. If you don't like it, quit watching and going to the ball games.

For the baseball fan, the 200 Million athelte is only worth the game ticket price + the time. Now if someone figured out a way to capitalize on that time, and makes an insane amount of money, can you blame them? If anyone, the baseball fan is to be blamed for watching the game.

It is a simple matter of how much money do you make for the club owner.
Lets say you own some sports franchise and a player becomes available that will increase your income by lets say a million dollars and you give that player 3/4 of that income, is the player making to much?
A major league franchise that wins the world series is in the chips and will recover all that they have spent for the equipment (players) that was purchased to get the championship. you have no idea as to the finincial aspects of owning a championship team in any sport.
