back when vista was about to be intro
they had a deal/promo buy a copy of xp and get a upgrade copy of vista
so I purchased a xp retail copy and also recieved a vista upgrade oem (from MS)

I would like to upgrade in the next few months to a I7 setup
can I reuse the xp mce/vista hp upgrade oem os onto the new i7 or is it strapped to the current MB?

Are you sure your XP is Retail? Windows XP Media Center Edition was only produced in an OEM version.

According to Microsoft's licensing agreement, OEM software, once installed on a PC, isn't supposed to be moved to new motherboards.

Regading the Vista Upgrade: It's an Upgrade, so it's definitely supposed to be used on a PC that already has a dedicated license for Windows. License-wise, you can't use it on your "new" PC because you can't move your XP license (assuming it's OEM) to your "new" PC.

From a licensing viewpoint, OEM licenses have definite limitations. That's one of the reasons that MS sells them cheap. They are supposed to stay with the orignal computer forever.
