IM software for Linux?

I've never cared much for IM software, but out of necessity I've started to use it to communicate with a bunch of people lately.

Trying to find some good software for it is easier said than done though.
Gaim - Nice, but I fail to find any option for changing my display name to anything other than my login.
Also integrates well with XFCE since both are GTK based.

Kopete - Nice too, a tad cluttered, but I can live with that.
Lets me change my display name, very nice.
Huge drawback in that it seems to have trouble making a difference between people being offline and busy.
Also keeps nagging me about people leaving the chat after like 30 seconds of inactivity.

Anyone have any tips?

There's an option to change your alias in gaim under account settings. I'm assuming this changes your display name.

I tried changing that one, but no one else could see it, just the ole mail address.
