We got my Grandfather wireless headphones one year so he could watch all of his ball games in peace.

Not that he needed them though, he was a true master at tuning my Grandmother out. I still stand in awe of his talent.
 
You don't really have to listen just let them vent. I told my wife I wasn't listening and she said that's great just let me rant. win
 
Sharpen your conversational skills to hijack to conversation to something more positive or something you actually care about. Best way to shut someone down without being rude, IMHO.
 
I have noticed something that helps. At the moment where you are asked what you think repeat back what they think using different terminology. ie 'Am I fat?' = 'I'm not fat and you are lucky to have me, don't you agree?' = you say 'I'm so lucky to have someone so beautiful in my life' my 2 cents.
