I'm so happy right now... my computer is so much quieter now!

My computer was sounding like a screaming, dying, jet engine.

The fan on my HS was starting to go so I pulled the fan apart, cleaned it and regreased it. Then I unplugged the front air intake fan, and disconnected the fan in my PSU.

Right now I'm closely monitoring my temps just to make sure it doesn't rise too much. If it stays cool enough I'm just gonna leave it.

There is only a slight whirr coming from the CPU fan and the fan on my GF2.

there is no way i would run my psu without the fan! that thing needs the sinks cooled by the fan....the temps you monitor wont show the psu overheating....which WILL happen, just a matter of time, hope it dont take out your mb vid and cpu when it fries.....

TURN OFF YOUR COMPUTER AND PLUG THAT THING IN RIGHT THE F*CK NOW.

Do you have something against fireworks?

No, but disabling the PSU fan could cause him to lose the Magic Blue Smoke that his computer runs on.

And I see by the blue light that he's at least CONSIDERED my advice. ;)

 Something tells me that some computer parts vendors are about to be hit with a HUGE RMA request..

I hear some run on sparks nowadays.

Either he's currently singeing his fingertips while opening his PSU or he's halfway to CompUSA by now. :D

Guys, I said I was watching the temps closely.

The temp inside the PSU has only risen by 3 degrees C and it's been running full load for a few hours now.

The temp inside the case has gone up by 2 degrees C.

how are you running a PSU with a fan? Is it dual fan and 1 is just unhooked? That or your room stays extremely cold. Of course if you have a low wattage PSU you might be able to run it without a fan(for a while anyway).

How are you monitoring the temp inside your PSU? At a single point in midair using a thermal diode? The ambient temp inside your PSU is not an accurate enough perception of how well all of the individal components are staying cool.

You are playing a dangerous little game for the sake of quiet computing, I must say. Why don't you scrape up $10 and buy a low-speed fan to replace the one in your PSU if the one in it now is too loud for you?

While not entirely fanless, I've run PSU's for years without a single problem by running a low rpm panaflo that barely pushed air.

Hmm. Perhaps you just need a quieter PSU... I prefer cooling over a tiny bit of noise, but... be careful :)

DO NOT UNPLUG YOUR PSU FAN!!!

If you want a quieter PSU you should change the fan in it to one of the silent ones even if it pushes less air at least there is active cooling on it. Your PSU is not designed for passive cooling. You are risking your PSU frying by doing that because it's overheating. Unless you have a temperature probe inside the PSU you don't know how hot it is getting.

A PSU overheating will not affect case temperatures because the PSU is enclosed and doesn't contribute much to the temperature of the case. Any and all hot air should be expelled from the PSU immediately due to it's closed design.

You are not only risking your computer equipment getting fried by a blown PSU but you are risking a fire hazard as well.

What he said. If you want a quiet PSU, either replace the fan or buy a new quieter one. Just don't disconnect the fan altogether.

Even true fanless PSUs can have problems if there is no airflow whatsoever.

Fanless PSU's are specifically designed such that the heatsinks take up ALL the space and even some external space.... and NO fanless psu's are rated for more than 400W
that should tell you something ----

It is definitley a dangerous fire hazard

however ... I have myself been lucky and had a PSU fan fail on me and had the system running in another room...... computer eventually shut down and a slight smell eminated from the room..... The case was so hot that it was burning to touch and after 25 minutes of being off it still was like a bar heater....... touch wood man!!! :)
