The stock cooling, while maybe not the best design-wise, does an acceptable job cooling the card, and contrary to popular belief isn't that loud, below 60-70% speed anyway. My cooler NEVER spins that high.

Baloney. I've had a pair of X1900XTX and THEY ARE LOUD. Ridiculous loud. It's an absolute necessity to mount an aftermarket solution, unless you like the sound of a 747 by your side.

It looks like X1950XTX has addressed the problem. We'll find out.

Well looks like you have other issues (i.e. high ambient temp) because I assure you mine isn't loud. So don't give me your baloney BS. Wait a minute..... I see you're running space heaters for CPUs, no wonder... ;)

Yeah, no reviews have ever noted the noise problem with X1900XTX...

Space Heaters? Yeah, I've got a few of those. :p

It depends on what both of your guys's computers are doing. If one of you has less airflow or plays more stressful games, or even has a higher ambient temp, the fan speed may need to adjust differently with you two. It can be loud, but also was dead silent when it wasn't stressing. It depends. Don't get into a debate about it when you two know if it is loud or not for yourselves.

Yep. Different strokes for different folks. I can't stand ATI's retail cooling (plus I don't like the high temps). I'd get an Accelero X2 pronto, and I installed one for my buddy's X1900XT - night and day difference in noise (X2 is silent!) and cooling (25C drop at load!).

However I usually go for aftermarket cooling on my GPU's - my 7800GT has an NV5 silencer on it; I like the peace of mind of a better cooling solution that I've installed myself, and the temperatures w/ aftermarket are always much lower as well. My 7800GT went from high 70's load to mid 50's, for example.

--------

The loudest stock cooling solution I ever had was on my ATI X850XT PE - it got ridiculously loud in games!

As I have mentioned before... I have already purchased a ATI X1900 XTX. I am VERY happy with it. My BF2 FPS went through the roof! I now have settings at or near max and I can't get my FPS below 70+. I should mention that I am stuck with 'only' running 1GB of memory at the moment (crappy Mobo issues).

The noise of my X1900 XTX is fine right now. I haven't heard a PEEP from my fan while gaming for hours on end (BF2 and Quake 4). I have heard what it sounds like at maximum (when I restart my PC it comes on @ full), and I certainly would have noticed if it sounded like THAT! I will see what happens when the A/C's get turned off, but in the meanwhile I should mention that my case has (5) 120mm intake + exhaust fans in it. It's the Antec 3700SLK and has a 120 intake, 120 exhaust, then add 2 more 120mm intakes that I have mounted in the side panels (filtered of course...) and the 120mm exhaust on my Anted PS. If you really must know, YES, I have an XP120 HS so, I have a 120mm fan on my CPU also (6x120's in my case). So, perhaps my case is different then most people have here.

I had originally come back here this morning to check and see what aftermarket coolers people were using on their X1900 GPU's, and it seems that the Arctic Coolings 'Accelero X2' is what most people are happy with. I see SVC.com has them for $22. I guess that I'll get one of those for the hell of it. Cooler is better and noise certainly won't be an issue.

There will be little point in going with the X1900XTX unless the price drops SIGNIFICANTLY, which isn't likely to happen in the short term. (And then you have to factor in the cost of aftermarket cooling for it.)

I agree here. And you don't mess with your warranty.

BTW, here the X1900XT prices dropped dramatically. I got yesterday a XT1900 512MB from Powercolor for 289 EUR (for my kids rig). The X1950XT is listing at the moment for 399 EUR - 38% more. I'm a fan from good cooling, but the price difference is substantial.

The cooler is noisy under load, but a least it blasts the heat out of the case. I think a NV Silencer Rev 5 fits on it, but it does not cover some RAM chips. I'm thinking on trying it together with a fan on top of those chips. If I do it, I will post some pictures here.

Hey Jiffy, doesn't the Accelero X2 blasts the heat onto the motherboard? It can cool the GPU but what is the consequence for the mobo and rest of the components?

The Accelero X2 does indeed exhaust it's air into the case interior. Despite that, I think that with deadken's case/cooling it won't be at all noticeable. Heck, in mine it's not that hot, and my case cooling isn't nearly as good as his. I'm not sure I'd hang one over top of a DFI northbridge though. I just put one on my X1900GT. I believe my card benefits more from it than a XT/XTX would - the X1900GT comes with a single slot cooler that also exhausts into the case interior, and doesn't cool as well as an XT/XTX cooler. The Accelero sure is quiet. :) You've got to be careful if you're going to use the supplied ram pads though - a few folks have reported tearing up their cards trying to take the cooler back off after using them, they can be that sticky. I was able to reuse the stock ones, so I apparently dodged that bullet.

Wow! Thanks for the information! I hope to be able to do the same (re-use). If not, I will have to do a slight smear of something (Artic Silver or something) to lessen the grip. I never would have considered that, but can only imagine what it'd be like prying that cooler off after a year or more with it on (I bought the extended warranty, so I might need to put the stock cooling back on within 2 years).

You're welcome. If your card is like mine, you should be able to pop the old heatsink off and leave them pretty much intact. Both cards are pretty fresh. I hadn't thought of the Arctic Silver idea until WelshBloke posted it in a thread I made. It's pretty cool you've already had the same idea. You probably won't have to bother though. I don't know if the company has fixed the situation, and I didn't want to be the guinea pig! Google the particulars for an interesting read. Seems some fellers have stuck knife blades in there to get'em loose:Q

What will be the successor to the X1900XT? Will there be a X1950XT? Will it be priced the same the way the 7900GT was priced the same as the 7800GT?
