I bought a no-name 15" monitor new in 1988. It's on my son's desk now, still working perfectly. Bright and sharp.

I have a Dell branded 17" Trinitron I bought at a thrift store for $20, mfg date 1996 or so, razor sharp, nice and bright (especially since I removed the coating..heh).

I've seen Shinho's go bad in months, and IBM's go bad in 2 years, but that's it. The name brands will generally either fail within a coupla weeks, or they will last a nice long time.

I wonder if there are other environmental factors that kill monitors? I have a 15" NEC at home that I have used for 5 years and it even got soaked when a window was blown out in a storm, dried it out and worked great ( that was 4 years ago). Now at work I have some HP branded 17" monitors. One ran great for a couple years then went dark like you couldn't get the brightness or contrast up enough, I replaced it with one from another location in the room and now it is going quick. I wonder if there is some kind of electric field in the area that kills them. Just seems funny a monitor works great until moved to my desk then they die
