Although I don't doubt I'll read it several more times in my lifetime, there's only one first. I can't remember a book that actually evoked such imagery and emotion. It took me forever to read and now I wish I would have slowed down a bit!

heh! I really need to get out more.

Its been at least 6 years since I read it, and i've forgotten so much that I think I'll re-read it. Only one problem. Do I read it before or after the movie?

If its before, i'll remember all the details, and probably be disapointed by the movie.
If its after, i'll have to wait a while, and will have a much better memory of what happens.

grr..

I just finished the trilogy again myself recently. I love the books...you can read them over and over and never get bored. I feel sad for the people who haven't discovered the works of Tolkien yet :(

Next up, I am going to read The Simarillion.

Always a great read! :D I also happen to be one of the few people whoe really enjoyed Ralph Bakshi's movie. I think it's brilliant in capturing the tone of the books. I just wish he had done sequels. The music is available here:

You can still read the Hobbit.
And the movie is coming out soon, although i`m afraid that it might be dissapointing, no way it is going to be as good as the book.

I read the Hobbit first, then the whole LOTR series. There is still an index to go thru and then the Silmarillion but I know that won't be the epic LOTR is. I'm looking forward to the movies but it'll be 2004 before the series is complete. I've listened to a little of the BBC radio drama and it's really good.

Even though the movie cant match the imagination of ...well, everyone in the world who has read the books, I am still glad to have the movies coming out. They should be a good tribute to the books, and hopefully get more people into reading them.

After the Hobbit and the LOTR there is The Silmarillion and The Unfinished Tales.

After that, re-read the LOTR with a greater understnding.

So true. How are you today, my friend?

I have to admit, the Silmarillion was hard for me to read. I gave up. But I moved on to the Dune books...

There is always more to explore!

Well, gotta go.... today is my busy day.

Peace!

Fine thank-you, Isla. I'm getting ready for a short day at work so I'll be back here fairly soon. I hope your project is going well.

The Silmarillion is a bit heavy and rather slow going compared to the LOTR. It doesn't need to read sequentially. Pick and choose stories. It is a bit more like the LOTR appendix; when you have completed it the trilogy takes on more meaning. Unfinished Tales is a bit harder still but well worth the reading.

...and if you've finished The Silmarillion and Unfinished Tales and STILL want more, there's always the History of Middle Earth series by Christopher Tolkien.

Of course, some will tell you that reading the rough drafts and original manuscripts of Tolkien's works demystify the whole experience, but I personally find them fascinating.

I saw Rush 4 times. I had their posters on my walls. They were the gods of my youth.

Very well, thank you.

I have some good ideas.

Isla, if it wasn't for Rush, I probably would have never developed any apreciation for music... it has made me very cynical towards todays 'popular' music. I will never forget hearing 2112 for the first time when I was 15.

To keep this in context with the thread... you guys should look for a song called Rivendell by Rush. It's awesome and it is the first song I learned how to play on guitar :)
