400w is plenty for such mediocrity
An Intel SSD and a 5850 is not exactly what comes to mind when "mediocrity" is mentioned. In fact, these two are pretty far from the list when talking about mediocre hardware.

If you meant to say "power-efficient", then you have clearly misused the term "mediocrity".

i also noticed in the past, sometimes video cards will run on lower power then they need, but you will get slower framerates or glitching/sticking framerates.

brand of crusty old PSU, and rail ratings?
it's a pos that game with the box, from novatech, don't even think it's got any brand on it lol!

i'll get some details and post 'em..

someone told me that the psu will be running less efficiently near it's maximum (400w) and that i should put the 850w psu i have spare (not the other 500w spare) in there instead..

does that make sense?

btw i know a BIT about some stuff, but psu's i know practically nothing about!

People overestimate their PSU requirements frequently.
whilst not knowing anything about psu's, i've strangely wondered if this was the case..

nowadays it's all low power (which is wonderful and i love it, my 5850 clocks back to 400mhz core using 27w), but 'back in the day' people always over spec stuff 'just to be safe'..

Pig, I gotta tell you. I'm not someone educated in power supplies, not an electrical engineer or anyone close but I can tell you this,,, You want a new, quality, PSU. The estimators for psu generally are overkill in my experience, a good 400 or 500 watt psu would be fine for your system even overclocked but quality is a must!!! If you choose to run your system off a junk psu that's fine but don't be too upset when it fails and takes your rig with it.

hmmz, interesting..

that might make me get a more powerful psu, definitely..

its just something ive learned from my own experience. i used to always think, "if it works, its working right". but computers are actually designed to work around A LOT of faults, and not getting enough power is one of them.

i had a 8800gts in a rig that played gta4 and all, but it was never totally smooth. i always just thought it was my weak cpu or whatever. the psu finally showed obvious signs of being stressed out, so i replaced it with a new corsair model. night and day difference. pc booted faster, games loaded faster and played liquid smooth. it was clear to me the components were finally working without faulting over and over, desperately trying to make up for the lack of quality power.

The problem is... the manufacturers overestimate their PSU capabilities frequently too. :hmm:

People have run GTX 260 on the FSP 300W PSU that come with the Silverstone SG05.

I'm running an i7 930@4ghz and a GTX 480 on a 500W seasonic I've used for the past 4-5 years. I think as long as a PSU is quality its ok
