You can backup the xxx.pst. Depending on your OS, it could be in various locations so just do a search. Or you can simply export your emails to a PST file and then later import it back..

That's possible with Outlook, but I'm not sure how you can backup messages with Outlook Express?

Go to file > import and export > choose export to file > choose personal folder file > click on mailbox and check the include subfolders option > make sure you send it to a directory you rember > click finish. That will create a *.PST file that is all your Outlook info, save it to disk and reformat and reload. :)

OEs messages are stored by default in C:\Windows\Application Data\Identities\xxx\Microsoft\Outlook Express. xxx will be a folder with some huge number, you'll se it. Just copy the folder to a disk and after the format replace it. You can also choose to store mesages somewhere else, from OE go to Tools\Options\Maintenance to do so.
