Its hard to even think of myself as a smoker, but its snuck up on me, I never smoked in high school , barely ever touched a ciggarette in my first few years of college, but somehow, over the last year, its taken control of me.

It started as one of my friends offering me a smoke after a party or something, im beer buzzed so sure whatever. Then it became something to do at parties, then on weekends, then during the week, next thing i know its during the day as well. And, as of recently, I actually BOUGHT MY OWN PACK!!!! I cant believe ive gotten to this point, and I've decided I'm going to stop now befoer it goes any further.

Whoevers with me join the cause, and put those cigs down today! forever!

Hey congrats on taking the first step! Hope you make it all the way through....

If you need some help just search for pics of lung cancer or hearts of smokers on the internet... those sure scared the hell out of me...

Train -- << ahh i didnt see that thread >>

Hey, this is your thread. I'll wish you the same good luck I wished to GF. :D

If it helps, here's a thought from someone lucky enough to have never smoked, but who has lost several friends in the past few years to smoking-related diseases --

I have absolutely no doubt that quitting the addiction is difficult, both physically and emotionally. I have watched tobacco (and heroin and crack) addicts try to quit. Some of them make it.

Keep in mind that the crap you go through is the price you are paying to get out of what you already got yourself into. The best reason to pay the price, now is that the price only goes one way, UP! The longer you wait, the higher the price, and the greater chance you have of doing irreparable damage.

Best to ya! :D

Good job Train.
Give it up before you start needing those cigs in order to function as a human being.;)
Good luck to you and keep it up! Like I said to girlfriday, surround yourself with people who will support you and you will be able to do it.

Harvey take on it is great - its true, you have to pay a price sometime. Will it be now going through some major discomfort until you are done, or will it be later going through agonizing pain as your lungs deform and you die in hospital at age 58? Just keep reminding yourself that no matter how hard this is its a hell of a lot easier than telling your family you have lung cancer.

Good luck on quiting. I quit like you and GF friday the 13th,Nov. 98 and once you get past the first few weeks, its a lot easier. Just the smell of smoke will be detested by you. Thats the best sign.

I advise you stay away from people who smoke and situations that would be normal for smoking, such as drinking. This advice is only applicable until you have the personal control over the urges.

I was up to 3 packs a day when I quit, and I couldn't be happier. My car smells nice,my clothes and linen smell clean and fresh, and food tastes better now. I am experiencing new sensations in oder identifying now,as I suppose the nostrils aren't coated in tar and nicotine any more.

Amd.now I get a non smokers price break on my insurance. Saving money all over the place and I may have added some more years to enjoy my grandchildren.

Good Luck and stick to it. YOU WILL SUCCEED!

Now take the money you saved and put it in a Roth IRA! You'll be rich!! You'll be rich even if you blow the money on....anything but cigarettes!...Just keep it legal. Best of Luck!

Good luck Train! Take the money you would normally spend on cigarettes and do something nice for yourself.
