I'm pullin my hair out!!! Win2K/NT... what is a -d switch on dos?

Okay .. I've been having this one same problem now since I got this computer, it's my first comnputer. I have a Matrox Diamond Max hhd in here, on a A7V mobo. I can install 98 no problem.. When I try to install Nt or 2K.. setup doesn't recognize any mass storage devices. I got a ata100 maxtor driver from Maxtor, it's on the floppy. So when I push F6 to specify, it asks me.. I put it in the floppy drive, it reads it "win2000 ata 100 driver" or whatever.. I choose it. "the file blahblah.SYS has an error, push any key to continue".. so I do.. Setup can't go on.. restart now. Nothing works.. I even hooked the drive up to the 66 port.. same thing.. I thought it was the ata 100.. but i guess it's not.. My drive model isn't listed on Microsofts list of compatible hardware. I don't know what to do. When I got the driver from Maxtor, it says "requires -d switch to extract in dos".. I dont' know what hell a -d switch is.. When I double click on ata100.exe it just opens up in Command prompt and extracts itself onto the floppy.. but it tells me that this.file already exists do you want to overwrite? I think it's cause there are two drivers there, on for NT and one for 2K.. I have an irking suspicion that the -d switch is something that makes it into two directories.. what's up.. It's been three weeks that I'be been wrestling with this problem.. I want to take my comp back where I got it and break it over the guys head. Help me.. please..
[edit]I've tried other drivers too, but nothing was even close[/edit]

I'm pulling this out of my @ss, but I suspect the -d switch is a flag to the self-extraction program to recreate the directory structure that the original files had.

So when you run the .exe to extract the files, if it creates subdirectories and puts the files there, it's probably being done right. In other words, that probably isn't your problem.

smp,

In windows open a command window. Navigate to the location that the exe is in then type "fred.exe -d" This forces the extraction of the exe(probably a pkzip) into the original directory structure. then you will probably have 2 folder with the sys files in them

Thanks... I called Maxtor today, and I finally pulled some info out of them.. the ata100.exe that I started this post is irrelevant.. i don't even need that.. but thanks.. i still don't think it's gonna work though.. I'm never gonna get nt/2k working on this system.. why .. why.. I gotta have the worst luck ever..
