Tokyo is the safest city I have ever been in. I felt 100% comfortable walking around at night time. The Japanese are really friendly people and will usually go out of their way to help you if you're lost or whatever.

Was in the middle of a big train station in Tokyo trying to figure out where to go. Had 2 or 3 people come up and try to speak English to me and help me figure out where I was supposed to go.

The Lexington Queen in Tokyo is (was? been a couple years) a pretty damn nice club. But cover charges can be through the roof, and ya gotta dress nicely.

Where in Japan are you going? There's lots of must-sees for tourists all over the country.

Don't eat the $1000 per piece puffer fish sushi... I wouldn't pay $1000 to risk dying from poison.

be careful of sushi, buy some slippers,
do NOT blow your nose inside a restaurant,
learn how to say rest room in japanese,
Be polite, most Japanese speak english, enough to understand you.
Get your "shots" ask you DR> what they recommend,Like hepatitis, etc
Bring extra Prescribed meds,on the plane carryon bag, along with a Current note from your DR. stating what and Why you take these meds..
check to see if you can add a health and life insurance rider to cover you in Japan
Bring extra $$ small bills for tips etc..
Bring extra toilet paper, toothbrush, toothpaste shaving stuf etc as needed
if wear glasses, extra pair, even old ones,
Copy of your passport/proof of citizenship, mail copies of these to the place you have a room reserved to stay...
Do you belong to AAA,or AARP,etc, ask them for more hints...

I spent two weeks in Japan, in a city called Makuhari.

ABC, you should get into Tokyo if that isn't your destination, at all costs. The city really is something to see. Tokyo station is a city unto itself, I actually ended up taking the wrong train back to my hotel, and I could see the buildings of Makuhari in the distance, getting further and further away from me!!

abc - i live in japan. pm me if you have any specific questions.

kyoto is my favorite city. its beautiful and theres a ton to see. imo, tokyo is dirty and like every other big city in the world. there is a fair amount to do there, though. be sure and check out harajiku and shinjuku. theyre stops on the train, which runs n a circle around tokyo. oh and if you fly into tokyo, take the narita express to tokyo central station. its simple, quick, and only cost about 1080yen.

good luck and enjoy your time here

ABC, sorry to hijack your thread a little, but do any of your guys know about deals where college students come to Japan to teach english over the summer? Can anyone provide me with an agency of something like that? I really want to do it, I just don't know where to start!

DO NOT BRING SMALL MONEY FOR TIPS :)

tipping to the japanese is like an insult and it is disrespectful
when my three college buddies went to japan for the summer they left some spare yen at the restaurant and the waiter basically ran after them just to give the money back...they like to call it "the tip of dis-respect" ;)
