In one of my C.S. classes we briefly studied recurrence relations and how to solve them. Anyways, I didn't do well on one of the midterms because I couldn't solve one of the recurrence relations that was on the exam. We were supposed to write out a few terms and find a pattern for the general formula.
So, in order to make up for that bad midterm I was working on some extra credit problems. All of the problems are solving recurrence relations. I finished 4 out of 5 of them, until I got to a hard one. And I mean this thing was practically impossible to solve. But the thing had a hint so I googled some keywords for that type of recurrence relation.
I finally found a .pdf that had examples on how to solve that type. But it actually explained how to solve those kinds in general.
So I used that method to solve the last problem on the extra credit. But then I realized that the method would also have applied to the problem on the exam. I tried it out and it worked perfect, and it was all mechanical. No having to look for a pattern and then guess the formula.
This method was absolutely nowhere to be found in my textbook. If only I had known this before the exam. Argh! :|
A couple of my friends missed that problem on the exam also. When I show them this method they are going to flip their lids.
