I'm paranoid, someone help me!

I want to upgrade my CPU from 2.4C to something faster (my mobo doesn't allow OC, and replacing mobo isn't an option, long story).

I've been offered a used 3.2C at a good price. The seller says he has OCed it before "for benching purposes" and that "95% of the time it's been running at stock".

There's no way to tell for sure just how hard he took it for how long, so I just have to "trust" his word for it.

Assuming he's telling the truth... can OCing in any way, even for a couple weeks total, permanently damage or hamper a CPU's performance? I'm sorta paranoid in buying this chip, I dunno why. I can just picture all these broken transistors and voltage leaks due to the OC...

If you don't know the person real well, or don't really trust the person, I wouldn't get it. Overclocking for a couple of weeks isn't gonna kill the chip. The only way that it would really be damaged, is if it was way overvolted. I had my 2.8e running at 3.5ghz for well over 6 months, and it's still going strong. Assuming the person is giving a no dead on arrival gurantee, and you trust them to give you your money back if the chip is dead, then go for it.

Shall I ask him what max voltage he fed the chip and for how long? (assuming he remembers AND tells the truth of course)

i'll relay the info to you overclocking pros and tell me what you think

i mean if he fed it like 2.5V for the vcore or something insane, that would make me think again (just a random number above what's sane, i dunno if thats even possible)

lol its probably safe, i doubt he would flood his cpu with voltage if it was his. but you never know, i would diffenately ask. how good of a deal are you getting, anyway?

He's offering it with a stock fan for 180USD.

used??? tell him to go fvck himself. he offers no guarantee, admits to running it outside of manufacturer's specs, and wants you to pay75% of retail. i'd do it for 125- 140 tops. otherwise, hold out til you can afford the retail and buy some peace of mind.

Agreed. Peace of mind is worth more than 80 or so canadian bucks.

Whenever something crashes or performs poorly, I'll always wonder if it's because of the CPU, no matter how unlikely.

By the way, is the following heatsink ideal for cooling a 3.0C or 3.2C?... LINK

I'm a "buy to run at stock" kinda guy... I know for a fact from online sources that the stock Intel HSF is effective but loud unfortunately. I heard this fan cools slightly better and is slightly quieter, or subsantially quieter if you run it at lower RPM.

I'm mainly worried about fitting it onto the chip and mobo without a hitch. I have an Intel D875PBZ, with about 2cm tops clearance from the top of the mobo to the bottom of my PSU. Will this fan fit? The Northbridge heatsink also has me a bit worried.
