modem, despite hard powercycle, refuses to connect. Sometimes takes 30 minutes to connect!? Loses connection at random and does not return for a while.

She needs a trouble call.

Try checking the cable itself running into the house, it could be damaged.

I had very similar problems to this, and it turned out that the cable had come unattached from the wall, and had fell onto the exhaust for the boiler, which had melted about 5" of the wire.

They replaced the wire and no probs since

I'm not saying actually move/do anything, just check the visible bits of the cable Also any visible stuff running inside the house too (got run over with a piece of furniture, computer desk etc?)

Might be modem, but most likely it's a line problem; probably the cable box. Most of the time, it's the box instead of the tap at the poll.

Yeah, when this happened to me, i thought it was cos of the crappy Ambit modem i've got now that i've moved areas. Used to have a Motorola SB4100, not a problem at all But in the end it was the line, and it was their fault, so we didn't have to pay anything
