I'm on a 100Mb/s network and network utilization is only 50%...

I'm transferring huge files across my network to my server and I was noticing that my network utilization peaked at around 50-54% and wasn't achieving 100% and I wanted to know why. I converted a cable/dsl router into a hub/switch (I'd assume switch since thats what it is) and I have that uplinked to a hub which is uplinked to a switch which is uplinked to a firewall. The connection between the server and the client computer are on the last hub/switch (the one I converted) so I don't see why there would be a problem. Is this an indication that this is really a hub and not a switch? Are my network settings messed up?

you will never see 100%. the task manager network graph is not a proper tool for troubleshooting transfer speeds. though if you're truly getting 50% of a 100mb card, i wouldnt be complaining 😉

to see if you're getting the speeds you should, use iperf. to diagnose any issues you may be having, we would need real life figures, not percentages.

instead of switch > hub > switch > firewall, reconfigure your network to be hub > switch > switch > firewall. while this shouldnt affect your transfers, its just best practice...
