I'm now the proud owner of an Asus 4850 512mb (non-stock hsf) :) OC'd to 800/1028 and rock solid :)

It's one bad puppy

Stock is 625/986 I think (Standard 4850 stock I assume?).

Temps oc'd are about 40'C idle, about 70'C load.

Only just fitted into my case, but the 120mm should give good airflow over both sides of the card. After installing it I took the pci-slot cover off the slot below it so the air from the 120mm could exhaust there.

Gameplay? It's a beast!

Maxed out FarCry, Source games and FEAR: Perseus Mandate no worries at 1600x1200, that's all I've tried thus far...

EDIT: backed off the RAM from 1038 to 1028 (CCC had it at 1038) and it's rock solid, there was slight mem artifacting at 1038 which is gone now :)

EDIT2: Cost me $211 AUD ($163 USD) from a local bricks and mortar (Austin Computers, the site that was listing 55nm GTX280 and GTX350 specs) :)

Cheapest 9800GTX+ there is about $255 AUD from memory

Nice looking card. How did you get the insides of the box so clean?

Last but not least, any real improvement in game play from that oc?

I didn't look very scientifically (but I can if you wish).

Just from playing some FarCry before and after, I think I got an extra 10FPS in FarCry in heavy vegitation (from about 65avg to about 75avg in the toughest places I could find)...

Case is clean because it's a fairly new build (maybe 2 or 3 months), also has an air filter that seems to work quite well (cleaned regularly)...if that is what you were asking...

Think I need an air filter! Nice gain from the oc though I must admit to an irrational fear of ocing.

I'll check in the Crysis demo for you now, back to back at the same save spot :)

EDIT: I just let catalyst control centre auto-tune go to work, I guess if it blows up it blows up!

EDIT: Crysis showed approximately 2 fps gain, from about 20 avg to about 22 avg overlooking the bay and the first NK camp, 10x7 very high performance settings.

HD4850 is a kickass card! I like it better than my all time favorite, 8800GTX. Same horse power and sometimes even more as you turn up the eye candy, was 1/3th~4th of the price and waaay less power hungry.

ENJOY!

Those games are way too old. You should something more gpu intensive like Crysis. :p

That is an amazing core overclock on a 4850. Not sure what the norm is on the 4850 as far as overclocking goes, but you'd think AMD would of used much lower binned GPU's for the 4850. That's a pretty amazing bang for the buck card right there!

My Powercolor 4850 PCS+ clocks to 740/1188. My friend bought one as well and it clocks to the exact the same. I gave it a run on Sup Commander for stability, seemed fine, but not keeping it oc atm though (don't have money to afford replacing if it dies on me atm :( ).

The stock clocks for standard 4850 is 625/993.

I don't like the looks of that cooler, it seems inefficient and also the card lacks any ram and VRM cooling. But I love your overclock. :)

A 3450 stop-gap card ;)

It may look inefficient, but it runs far cooler than the stock solution ;)

I was surprised there's no VRM cooling, but that doesn't seem to hold it back. Worth adding a few little aluminium RAMsinks on the VRMs?

I'm honestly not sure how much assistance RAM cooling would provide, especially when you consider that the stock solution from memory is a one-piece hsf that more than likely makes the RAM hotter than it would otherwise be (since it gets a-glowing hot from the GPU, as I understand it)...

I guess you're right about the ram cooling situation. The ram is undoubtedly cooler then it would be with the stock heatsink. And maybe Asus designed another type of voltage regulators for this card, otherwise they would overheat and shut down the card, if there is nothing on them. But, the card would look "cooler" with heatsinks on ram and on VRMs, isn't it.

great looking card, but you should buy some heatsinks to put on the RAM chips on the side. I bet they get hot during play.

Enjoy that card, I know I'm loving my 4870. It's struggling slightly with clear sky at 1680x1050 most things turned up full (not the uber lighting though) but runs smooth enough. ATi has taken their game up a notch and it was fun to get my first "red" card in 6 years. I remember the days of my Radeon 8500... *sigh*, it went before it's time.

Nice motherboard dug, is that a retail hsf in there?

Yeah, it's the one the card came with. Asus call it a 'Glaciator' I think.

http://www.asus.com.au/products.aspx?l1=2&l2=8&l3=725

The bottom one, but with 512mb RAM.

LOL, I meant the CPU HSF?!

yeah, stock Q6600 hsf.

With my .992v idle/1.1v full load Q6600@stock (G0) it's more than enough to keep it cool :)

Hey dug, fellow Perth dweller here :)

That's an awesome card you found there! 790Mhz holy crap..

I bought an HIS IceQ 4850 about a month ago, it only gets to 675/1050. It runs at around 60 C under load but just won't clock any higher.

At the time Austin didn't have much.

IceQ hsfs are very nice

I didn't buy this with any idea what hsf it had, it was just the cheapest 4850 Austin had and I knew I liked Asus. I assumed it would have the stock hsf.

The Asus Glaciator is a very good cooler. I have one on my HD3850, and it keeps it below 50C while under full load and overclocked. It idles around 35C.
