I bought a used (very good condition) Canon 20D camera body for $450 on Craigslist. I just placed an order for the Canon 50mm f1/8 lens and a Sandisk 2GB Extreme III CF. The total comes out to be about $565 for everything. I'm quite happy. :D

Is there a big difference between the Sandisk Ultra II and the Extreme III? Amazon shows only a $4 difference, but the Extreme III comes with free shipping so they're basically the same price.

Welcome to the DSLR club. All things being equal, go for the Extreme III. That's the one I use all the time, and it is a bit faster than the Ultra II (a newer model.)

aren't the faster models prone to shorter life? besides, can the 20D even take advantage of the extra speed?

oh yeah, welcome to the club.. hand over all your money now :)

For $4, I would go with the Extreme III, if only for the faster read speed in a card reader.

Welcome to the world of DSLRs. Consider yourself warned, that nifty fifty won't be the last lens you'll buy!

No apparent short life difference noted. And the 20D can fire off more sequence shots than the 5D. That really is about the only place you notice any speed increase. Taking signle shots really doesn't show any apparent difference to the user.

As "I Am God" says, it does become apparent when you are off loading hundreds of multi-meg image files. The faster read speed rules. :)

I just joined the DSLR club a few days ago as well! So far I'm loving my Nikon D40. Right now I'm debating whether or not to pick up the 50mm f/1.8 lens or wait it out and see if they release an AF-S version...

You got the 18-55mm kit?

That's not a bad little lens, bro has it for his D40 and he's taken some absolutely cracking shots, I've got a few on pics if you're interested:
