I'm not sure what to think about this... slow uploading of files to server.

I *think* its a network issue and not a server issue.. For simplicity I will only talk about the components of the network which pertain to this issue and I'll try to keep it simple.

I have a 10/100 24 port switch and connected to it is a server running Server 2003, a 802.11g wifi access point, and my Vista PC. When I copy any files from my Vista PC to the server through the Ethernet port (plugged straight into the 24 port switch) UPLOAD speeds are slow like 50-150k/sec. Takes 15 min to upload a 700MB ISO. Now, if I unplug the ethernet line from my PC and use the 802.11g wireless card that connects to the AP connected to the same switch, it will get 1.3mb/sec or so and that 15 min upload takes like 1-2 min. I have no idea why.

It doesn't make any logical sense. If anything you'd think the data going through the AP would be even slower than the ethernet, not faster. And since it's all going through the same switch and same server I don't see how the speed can differ. I tried different ethernet lines from my Vista PC to the switch and its the same issue. I found some Microsoft KB about slow throughput from Vista machines to a Win2k3 server and tried that but it didn't help plus wouldn't explain why copying the file via WIFI isn't slow.

I'm about to pull my hair out trying to figure this out. It just doesn't make sense at all. Seems like it'd be a bad cable for sure but I've tried different cables AND different laptops so it's nothing with the client PC.

Have you tried any computers with a different operating system?

Yes, I tried another laptop with Windows 7 and it did the same thing (fast through wireless, slow ethernet) and then I had another server running 2003 that I tried and it was slow as well. HOWEVER, when I copied something from the clients to the 2nd server (via a mapped, shared folder, just like with the first one) it was full speed. If it wasn't for the wifi causing good speeds with Server #1 I'd swear it's just a problem with Server 1's NIC/cable but it works full speed if you're sending it through wifi.

I know this doesn't make any sense at all.

Also, this is something that just recently started. As of 2-3 months ago I remember coping a bunch of ISO's to this server and they were copied, over ethernet, at full speed.

Screams of a cabling problem. Replace the cable with a new store bought one. Cables can go bad if they are bent sharply, knoted or kinked.

you need to disable autotuning or play around with it.

also disable ipv6 on the adapters. (!!!)

also disable the firewall service if you dont use it.

Also make sure you turn off flow control vista iirc turns it on by default.

poopy drivers also do this. My asus mobo did like 20k/sec until i found new drivers now it pumps 500megabit. took me a few tries (windows built in, asus, realtek) to find the right one.

ipv6 is a mofo. kill it dead.
