I have decided that when it comes time for me to quit, im not giving two weeks notice. WHy should I??? last week i watched two people get layed off, one was a software tester and the other was a software engineer.

both had been with the company for 14+ years, did the VP or HR give them two weeks? hell no. they came in like any other day and by 10am they were escorted out of the building. 14 years of service and get treated like a fricken thief. :|

so, nope if something comes along better, im just walking. f*ck the two weeks notice.

So when your new job calls up this job and asks if you put in the notice, they'll say "no" and your new job might not be thrilled.

My current boss really respected the fact that although they needed me up here quickly, I wouldn't leave my old job hanging. It just the right thing to do to them, even if they wouldn't do it to you.

You may get sued if you don't. One guy was in the news about that, lost like 10K.

not giving a 2 weeks notice? Hey, it's your future. Your company may suck but they can still ruin you if your new employer calls for a reference and gets told "he didn't even leave a 2 wk notice."

But hey, your call. And your bridges.

Agreed. Especially if you've been there for a while.

It's crap like that that cements my opinion that company loyalty is pointless. So quick to lay you off no matter how long you've worked there.

I did the exact samething 8 years ago when i got hired here. my boss wanted me faster but it just didnt feel right leaving my old company without two weeks. so i did what you did.

but i just cant do it now. after working with those two loyal hard working people for the past 8 years and to see them thrown out like that, it just didnt sit well with me.

It all depends on the job and the people you work for. Some are worth walking out on, others not.

I agree with that. I think my boss is great. he isnt an asshole and is very easy to work with. he leaves me alone to do my job and i give him updates everyweek of whats going on and the status of projects. I would feel bad for him and what it would do to our dept, but not bad enough to give two weeks.

I don't know why you would want to do such a thing based on what happned to others. Has the company treated like crap? The truth is, you and the company are not equal, such is corporate fact. They have the right to terminate the contract any time, but you as an employee, should give 2 week notice. An emotional action like this may come back and haunt you later in your career.

did they get severance pay? if so, that is the equivalent of giving notice

nope, jsut what ever PTO time they had.

I'd set the building on fire if that happened to me. At least I got got severance pay the last time I got laid off. Watching TV in my underwear at noon while getting paid for three months! Now that's the life!! ;) :D

They can't say that by law. In this case, the absolute worst they could say is that he quit voluntarily (as opposed to being laid off or terminated for performance reasons) and that (if they did hold a grudge) they wouldn't rehire him (and that question most employers no longer answer).

Take however many years you worked where you currently are and just put a nice be gap into your resume for future applications.

Sure, go ahead.

Sounds like a good idea to me.
