how do you send private messages?!?

If someone could please give me the step by step process.
I know this sounds dumb, but the "how to" is not painfully obvious on this site.
I have attempted to send at least 5 private messages over this weekend and have not received a single reply, which leads me to believe I am doing something wrong.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I know to log in, then click on private messages, ....then what???
 
ummm, right the padlock. Could you be a little more specific? As requested, step by step.

I have the messaging option turned on and other users are receiving my messages, but I am having problems updating my profile and therefore not receiving replies.
When I put in my name/email. etc. to update my profile, i get an error message that says "You do not have permission to access this forum. Error Code 578."

When you update your email, you aren't using one of the major free providers, like Hotmail, are you? FYI, most of the major free email providers are banned, because lots of trolls and spammers like to use them as "disposable" accounts. AOL is also banned entirely, for similar reasons. The complete list (check to make sure your new address is not on it) is here, copied from the FAQ (accessible via a button at the top of these forums):

  • Nightmail
