(by PC I mean Political Correctness). The other day I was shopping with my sister, and we stopped in a clothes store called "Eye Candy" in a mall. It's one of those ultra-hip teen girl type stores. We looked around and saw tons of clothes that were done in army camoflauge etc, which I find to be wrong but just rolled my eyes at it.

Then, my sister and I saw a tanktop that had us both apalled. It was a green camoflauge tanktop, in the middle of the front in red glittered letters it said "*Vietnam*".

My lord. How can anyone possibly think that it's a cool fashion thing to print in red glittery letters a terrible war in American history where tens of thousands of men lost their lives. Not to mention, all the thousands of people who died back in the states due to protests of that war. It's awful. It makes me angry. :|

You do realize that Vietnam is a country, right? Not a war?

Although I do admit it's fairly tasteless on a camo shirt.

Umm....yeah when they put it on an American soldier's camoflauge background I'm sure they were thinking of the country, and not the war.

<< For it is the doom of men that they forget. >>

Yeah, that's why we go to school. A glittery hip tshirt is not necessary, thanks.

I found this take on Vietnam interesting:

<< About 10 years ago I did a lecture to the Air War College at Maxwell where I said that Viet Nam was a successful campaign of attrition in the Seventy Years War, and was in fact one of the decisive campaigns of that war -- and a mighty US Victory. The cream of the jest was that the USSR believed the US Left and convinced itself that Viet Nam was a Soviet victory. This encouraged them to believe they could project national power in our despite, and to go into Afghanistan, where they managed to be on the wrong end of yet another war of attrition.

Viet Nam was a US success because a great part of Soviet transport production including trucks and such was built in the USSR, transported at great expense to Viet Nam and destroyed by USAF. When North Viet Nam invaded the South in 1975 they had more armor than the Wehrmacht had at Kursk, and more trucks than Patton ever had in the Red Ball Express. This was all replacements for similar amounts of materiel destroyed in 1973 when the US at a cost of 663 US casualties aided ARVN in repulsing a 150,000 troop invasion -- fewer than 40,000 ever got back home -- bringing with it more tanks than the Wehrmacht had at Kursk and more trucks than Patton ever had -- none of which ever got home.

Viet Nam helped convert the USSR into Bulgaria with missiles. They neglected their own infrastructure to send materiel to Viet Nam for us to destroy.

In the 60's I had a 3-way TV debate with Allard Lowenstein and McGeorge Bundy. Allard finally looked at me and said "Jerry, you want to win it and get out." I nodded. "I just want to get out. But your friends there " -- he pointed to Bundy -- "want to lose it and stay in."

I was I think for the only time in my life in a nationally televised debate -- or indeed any debate -- silenced, because he was right.

Of course that was the right strategy: to appear to be losing and stay in. I doubt Bundy or Johnson or any of the generals understood that. I think Possony did. At the time I did not; it was only later that I realized that a war of attrition was precisely what would bring the USSR low, after which the threat to negate the missiles and turn them into just another 3rd world country brought them down.

I was just recently told that referring to a particularly large member of the Grouper family as a "Jew Fish" is no longer acceptable.

If so, then I think the PC folks have a little too much time on their hands. Perhaps the saying "Look at the pot calling the kettle black" can also be considered PC unacceptable. Even though it really has nothing to do about race, and everything about hypocrisy.

I think we all need to relax just a little. And just who the hell is behind all the PC stuff anyways? I can tell you, I'm a liberal, and it ain't us! :p

Stark, that was really interesting. Upon greater thought, I think Mr. Pournelle has a valid point. Vietnam did more to weaken the USSR, which was really the enemy then the Vietnamese.

Yeah, that is very tasteless. And just plain disrespectful for the soldiers who gave their lives in the war.

Of course everybody is entitled to their opinion... in this case JohnJohn was not satisfied w/ what he saw. However I am sure that there will be people who look at the shirt and say, "I must have that!"

I don't think the production line of the tank top had the same thought about you did (about the American soldiers dying).

Nonetheless, you just have to have an open perspective towards these things. =)

Stark:
Thanks for that information...I'd never heard things put that way before even though took a class that spent a few months going over the Vietname war and I realy appreciate the insight you shared.

-it may be tasteless but remember, they are only words! Also, please think about the mentality of the little girl who will be wearing that tee. I really don't think that anyone shopping in a store called "Eye Candy" would not be a particularly political person.

If anyone is interested in Vietnam besides the war check out what they did against the Mongols! They are the only country to ever defeat them. Also if any of you are poetry lovers check out "the tail of Kieu".
