I'm no stupid after all

My car just died on the way to work today. I left it on the side of the road and spent $20 to get to work. I have a kind-of broken gas gauge. I just get like $20 of gas every week. The car went put-put-put, die. I might be stupid because I might not have gotten gas. I'll update you guys in a few hours.

Update: I'm happy to admit it wasn't gas. It wasn't spark plugs. It's probably the fuel injector or something like that. I had it towed to the shop. If it's over 200 I'm just going to take the plunge and buy a new car.

Update: It's the timing belt.

Everyone I know who has a finicky gas gauge uses their odometer and trip meter to figure out when their next fill-up is needed.

Anytime people say stuff is easy to replace... it really isn't. I'm inclined not to believe you. My cars a piece of crap death trap, and I'll be happy when I can sell it to some unfortunate soul for $500.

I figure it out by mile as well... except I approximate and over estimate by huge amounts to save myself the hassle.

Definitely use the trip meter every time after you fill up. That should keep your pretty informed on how much gas you have left. And I would stay away from a new cluster also because it could likely be something other than just the cluster from keeping the gauge not working.
