If you don't already do a distributed computing project, why not come over to the Distributed Computing forum and see what it's all about. Basically what we do is install a "client" program that uses our computers' spare processing power to process small packets of data that is downloaded from the project's server, and then we send back the results. It may not be useful, but it is very fun, and the team competition is probably the most exciting part.
BTW, if you see some guy going around saying "More, more, more...", it's Engineer, and he's addicted to SETI. ;)
