Look at the bottom center portion of the pic, sorry it's a little blurry

Basically, I boot up my computer, smell something funny, open the case to see a little yellow flame emanating from my drive bays...at first I thought it was my NMB Panaflo fan shorting out or something, but then I was like, oh crap, thats my E: drive right there...

No major data loss, just some music and video files and a few games I installed on there...

But WTF, hard drive catching fire? Maxtor will never get another purchase from me again. Thank god the other HDDs in my systems are Seagate/WD.

Yes, thank god you have Seagate.

You do realize that Seagate owns Maxtor and any HD's within the past year or two are just rebagged Seagates? LOL.

The Maxtor I have is from pre 2004, it's not one of the newer models. Funny that it burns up (literally) while one of my other secondary drives, an even older 120GB Seagate Barracuda, runs like a champ.

And yes, I did realize that when I went to the Seagate site to check for warranty...which expired 2 years ago.

Quantum Fireballs used to do that a lot. Maxtor bought Quantum. They integrated the self destruct chips in their lines I guess.

I won't buy Seagate anymore because they bought and will be corrupted by Maxtor.

My wife has WD stock in her IRA account. We appreciate your support.

I'm also having serious doubts about PC Power & Cooling now that they're owned by OCZ.

You are not the first to experience this. I first heard of it at a thread at BroadbandReports, pictures and all. Then about a week after that thread, there was a guy at Hardforums. Same exact chipset with the label "SMOOTH" on it (bit of irony for ya). These threads popped up just before the Seagate buyout, I don't know how class action has been avoided.

If you venture through off-topic, the youtube link above is not rick roll FYI :D

I've stopped clicking on youtube or other video sites until there is are at least 2 good comments stating that the link is what it was supposed to be :)

It isn't rickroll. Also, I went through a couple WD drives on older bought computers. They would still work if one wasn't 10 years old and hooked up to no monitor and the other didn't have a virus.

WD then and now! Not the fastest but generally the most reliable! Unless, you are talking about their Raptor lines then you also have the fastest.
