Taxes in Hawaii are lower than the national average. According to the Tax Foundation, in 2011 Hawaii had its tax freedom day 20th in the nation, ie: noticeably lower than average.

Notably, from that chart you will see that the tax burden of the average resident of Hawaii is actually LOWER than that of the average resident of Texas. (this has to do with a lot of things, such as incomes, etc.) Most likely the real reason you are noticing the difference is because you don't own property. Texas has no state income tax, but it has some of the highest property taxes in the entire country. If you own a house, you get screwed by them, if you don't own one you don't even notice. You're just used to being in a state that doesn't tax your specific behavior as much.
