Wow!! I just accepted a teaching job in Japan. I am excited but at the same time very cautious. I have never been to a foreign country before.
Assuming the visa process goes smoothly I should leave sometime in January.

Has anyone ever taught English in Japan or another foreign country before?

I did, and I was killed by a loud mob of anti-American Japs.

Just kidding ;)

Good luck!

Haha! I was thinking the exact same thing. They must be getting pretty desperate for english teachers in Japan. ;)

My friend, Amber, is a teacher in the JET program. She moved about 6 months ago :( I know she's happy though.

very cool! I was fortunate enough to visit Japan back in 1989. Although very expensive, it was awesome. The poeple are very friendly and there were so many cool things like being able to buy octopus tentacles at a 7-11 store.

pretty cool..... gotta love dem schoolgirls! ;)
but stuff there is too damn expensive. i know ppl that traveled there on business. a regular apple costs like $4USD. a single piece of toro sashimi cost like $20USD. way too expensive for me. but it would be nice to try some fugu. can't seem to find a place in LA that serves fugu. :D

I feel sorry for those Japanese students that have you as a teacher, ENGLISH TEACHER, who can't even spell the word 'accepted' right. I think professor's that are not capable of teaching should not teach. I am saying that from my personal experience as a student in college.

Unfortunately, I was so excited to post this topic that in a rush to type it......... I slipped. I know I can see the irony here but lets not be rude. This just teaches me the be more patient and not take things for granted when writing.

Hmmmm...anyone notice anything hypocritical about this?
"professor's" != "professors"

I do agree with you though, KyRNzKeWL. I feel the same way about my professors that write illegibly on the chalkboard and can't speak proper english.

I guess you're going to start being more patient now that you've written that sentence, right?

"the" != "to"

Damn guys, we all make speling mistakez on Ananadatech!

Japan is nice. My brother taught there for a year and came back for school and work for a couple years, and then went back there several months ago because he liked the country so much. THough its one of the few Asian countries I've been too based upon what I know its the first I'd live in given the chance if i was going to live in Asia.

Its going to be a major culture shock to you, especially when you get in the airport and realize you're the only white guy in the building. However, you'll warm up to it in time and the people seemed pretty nice. Its going to be a great experience for you.

Hmm ... It all depends on where you lived before. If you are currently living in a small, southern US town, I think there will be a shock when you get there.

And about the whole "realize you're the only white guy in the building", I don't think that would be a shock to me, since I'm the only "white guy" in 2 or so of my classes at highschool ;)

I hope you're not with NOVA because if you're working for NOVA you've signed up for a year of hell. My friend's trying to get out of it now.
