I'm looking to buy a Mitsubishi Lancer Evo

Hello guys and girls,

I currently own a 2005 Subaru Impreza WRX with PPP (265bhp) and after owning it for over 2 years, I'm bored with the performance. I have been persuaded by my brother to look at an Evo instead. Hence, I'm looking to purchase a second-hand 2007 Mitsubishi Lancer Evo IX FQ-360. I checked out my insurance and my fully-comp premium will be the same as the Scooby (£850 per year) with a lower excess (£300 based on an extra NCB over my current insurance policy)

I have also spoken to my local Mitsubishi dealer, which is 5 minutes drive down the road from where I live. The dealer said that the service intervals are every 4.5K / 6 months or which-ever is soonest (I already knew this) and average out at £250 to £300 per service. He also said that the car should come fitted with a SmartNav system as standard, although some dealers never bothered fitting this. The SmartNav can then be enabled as a Cobra tracking system provided I pay an annual subscription, which is what I do on my current car. This should keep the insurance companies happy.

The extended warranty costs about £400 / year and with the age of car I'm looking at, the warranty will expire some time in 2010, so I would want to extend it.

The fuel costs should also be about the same since my current car gets about 80 miles on half a tank of Super Unleaded. I've never bothered working out the mpg, but I guess it will be in the 20s.

Therefore overall, it will cost me about £600 more a year than my current car to run it (including the warranty), which I can live with.

My budget is £25K and I'm looking for a 2007 model in pristine condition with low mileage. Something like this would be ok, although it doesn't seem to have the SmartNav system fitted.

Anyway, that is enough of me spouting written diarrhoea, and I'll get to the point of this post; does anyone currently own or has previously owned one of these (or a similar Evo) and can you tell me your experiences of ownership.

Cheers,

wow i dont know that the subie cost as much to insure in UK as a special edition Evo.

though, aren't you worry that ur driving a cock car?

Can you modify the car you currently own? I'd do that, particularly with cars such as WRX and Evolution which are already very similar.

Thanks for the replies. I can answer both posts at the same time.

The Prodrive Performance Pack (PPP = 40BHP extra performance) added about £500 to my premium, so modifying my current car to the performance of the FQ-360 would mean bending over, pulling down my trousers and asking for the good news from the insurance companies 😀

It would also cost a small fortune to modify my current car to that performance. The STI would be a better platform to begin with, but if I'm going to expense of buying a STI, I might as well pay extra and get the performance paid for upfront. Plus it means that I get the added benefits of the (extended) warranty and being able to get it maintained (or bits replaced) by the dealer network.

I like the performance.

Edited to sort out formating.

Import a V8 from the US. That is way and hella pimp.

I'm not sure how much that would cost, but I would imagine that it is expensive with import taxes and whatnot. I may also have problems with parts, servicing, etc. and trying to sell it on in the future (there can't be much of a market for US cars over here, since I rarely see them on the roads).

To me, going from a WRX to an Evo doesn't really make sense. How old are you?

I'm 28. That Evo is quite a step up in performance from my WRX.

I have a 2005. Take care of it and it will last, pretty simple. With the wrong driver they can go through clutches. I don't put a lot of miles on mine but in about 2 and 1/2 years and 12,000 miles I've had no issues at all (knock on wood).

Thats good to know, thanks. I average about 10K a year, so I won't be putting a massive amount miles on it. I will likely own it for 2-3 years (same as my WRX), then upgrade to something else.

Which model do you own?

Our models are different over here. Mine is 5 speed, has the ACD. Stock is 269hp I think. I've added minor bolt ons. Pretty tame.

It will still be pretty quich though.

I'm thinking about fitting a dump valve (if it doesn't already have an aftermarket one fitted). It sounds cool when it 'sneazes' as you dump the clutch 😀
