I'm looking for higher performance. Do I go with more MHz or faster RAM settings?

Howdy AnandTechers,
Check my MonsterBox for details but basically, heres the deal. I have my 933EB o/c now to about 950MHz and it's rock stable at the fastest RAM settings 2-2-2-5 with 4 way interleaving. I'd like to try and squeak some more MHz out of the FSB but the RAM doesn't seem to like that idea at the fastest settings. I'm aware that P-III's aren't happy above 1GHz anyhow but should I make the attempt to break that mark at the expense of the fast RAM settings? This might sound lame but I'm really trying to eek every last drop of performance out of this unit. Thanks all

If you're really serious about more performance you should buy a T-bird system, but to me your present one seems pretty OK as long as you're satisfied with having a slow CPU.

🙂 🙂 😉

That was a very helpful post...Not.

Why don't you try downloading some benchmarks and try testing which gives you better performance? Obviously you won't see any dramatic increases and there will probably be tradeoffs.

Hey BlueScreen, Thanks, for nuthin. Slow CPU? Gimme a break already. You're only o/c to just over a gig so I wouldn't exactly consider that the worlds fastest. If I wanted a flame fest I would have posted the question on Aussie Overclockers. I just wanted to know if anyone thought the extra 50 or so MHz would be worth it at the expense of slowing the RAM down. And what's up with having a RAID board if you're not even going to set it up like that? :disgust:

Higher memory timings will probably give you the most performence, but like Nitzylpick said you should download some benchmarking software and test it out see which is the best.

Sorry if I offended you, but I couldn't stop myself after I'd seen that you have 512 MB RAM and still consider buying more. Hint hint: no fun at all with Win98 and more than 512 MB RAM. 😛

Personally I wouldn't sacrifice memory speed, but if you could get the memory running at a, say, 10% higher frequency with CAS3 instead of CAS2 the choice should be pretty simple...
