I'm looking for a reliable hard drive

Looking to buy a hard drive and want some opinions....I am getting about an 80 gig HD and 7200 rpm is fine....I am wondering what have you all have had good luck with. I know the Seagate is very quite but I am after reliablity. Please let me know what all you have all found to be the best hard drive....thanks for the advice 🙂

Seagates are pretty reliable. I have one, and it's been working good. The IBMs have been failing a lot (both the 60GXP and 75GXP). Some have had better luck with the IBMs. Maxtor and Western Digitals are also pretty reliable...but all hard drives can fail. It's just a matter of how often. Some users will have a high failure rate with one hard drive, while another might not, so I guess it's just a matter of luck. Hope this helps.

Great that does help....I know it is kind of just luck of the draw. But I have no experince with any except Western Digital....Thanks

I've had 2 western digitals fail on me, (a 40 gig 7200RPM & 60 gig 7200RPM) fortunately, the return drives I got worked a lot better than the original, and I have no complaints about western digital 🙂

I also have maxtor, and that one hard drive I've got has outlasted both of my western digitals, and is a sturdy drive.

IBM is one I would stay away from, and I never have worked with seagate so I can't speak about them...

The Cuda IV uses fluid bearings which may contribute to reliability. Maxtor also has a version of the 740 sporting fluid bearings. Think I saw the 60 GB model at Newegg the other day.

running an WD 80gig now, a Maxtor 40 and 30 also. runs great. my brother is running WD 100GB and Maxtor 40GB and my other brother's got a Maxtor 20 and WD 60GB. all running just fine.

for reliability I'd say maxtor right now, they are the only drive I use when building systems as of now. I may change to WD for some systems, they are getting better, but they aren't time tested right yet. Never had a matrox even get a bad sector.

From many drives I owned in the years (and still have them) I had only 2 failed (1 Seagate 1.2GB and 1 Conner 50MB); got plenty of WesternDigital drives (ranging from 170MB-40GB) and none ever failed. Got few Maxtors & Quantums as well, no problems. Lately started with IBM's, and while they didn't fail exactly, I returned 2 out of 4 because acoustics problems (2.5" Travelstar DJSA-220 20GB & Deskstar 60GXP 60GB).

I think my next drive purchase will be either WD, Maxtor or maybe Seagate (in this order).....

I like that order.

Some claim IDE drives lately are made with lesser quality than just years before. All I know is I hear very few instances of problems with scsi hard drives.

There is nothing wrong with Seagate's reliability. I have used 4 Barracuda IV's without a single problem. I would recommend them as a reliable, quiet drive.

I like the sounds of Seagate, WD, and Maxtor. Have any of you ever used or have a drive like this one by maxtor on newegg? Like the sounds of it:
MAXTOR EIDE HARD DRIVE MODEL # 6L060L3 60GB 7200RPM - OEM, DRIVE ONLY DiamondMax PS D740X Plus ATA133/100, 2MB Cache Buffer, 3 Year Manufacturer Warranty QUIET DRIVE - "L" denotes Fluid Dynamic Bearing Motors..
Let me know if youve ever used or seen reviews on this drive please.
Thanks
