My di-624 from dlink is getting old. Eversince I got it, i've been having signal issues at where my room is. What is a good router with wireless broadcast without the need of a range expander? Also, routers that are capable of any 'mods' are also welcome.

Also, the router has got to have 8 ports for ethernet.
 
The linksys WRT54G or WRT54GS (Speedbooster) are pretty popular, as there are a wide range of accessories available, including high-gain antennas, as well as the fact that the firmware is based on linux, and there are plenty of specialized firmware that you can download for it.
 
One of the reviews says that the router covers the exact same distance as the di-624, plus you lose the benefits of open-source firmware...

I did so, and was able to pick up a good quality signal through several concrete walls...

Hawking makes some nice ones that are widely available at a reasonable price... if you get 2 of the directional models & point them at each other, they can just about double your range.. a single non-directional model on the receiving end gives about a 20% boost but may not solve your problems by itself.

Edit: Note that if you have more then one PC receiving wireless from your router, you'll want to get an non-directional unit for the router & directional ones for the PC's.

I USED to love the Dlink products, but after about 4 DEAD di-524s, I bought a WRT54G from Linksys.

DO THAT. Solid, unlike my dlink, and decent wireless. If you add the antenna boosters (available for 9.99 at Radio shack RIGHT NOW - in store only I think) then it gets REALLY good range.

I am a Linksys hater, but they seem to be the only ones with a reliable cheap router out.. 🙂
 
the WRT54G seems to be getting good reviews everywhere, while the DLinks are getting mix reviews. I need to reset my DI-624 almost everyday just to get good performance. I think I'll give Linksys a try.
 
My knowledge of networking and wireless is very limited, but this is the way I understand it ...

The WRT54G latest models (?? 5 and 6 ???) are NOT the famous linix based version any longer and will not support linix mods.. The WRT54GS for a little more is still linix based firmware and supports the 3rd party mods that provide many more options for those (not me yet) that can make use of them.

Please comment on if I have this correct or not.

Or you can get the WRT54GL, which is basically the same as older WRT54G routers.
