I looking for a new stand alone DVD player.
My current model from 99' is having a real tough time playing some of my dvd-r media (it cant play dvd+r at all.)
Main concern to be able to play dvd-r and dvd+r media.

So i have been browsing through various forums for some ideas on what to get.

I have noticed that the Philips DVP642 seems to be a popular unit for the under 100$ models.

I like that this player supports divx and xvid codec, but i will very rarely use this feature.
From what i had read from around the net; some users said that this unit has Subpar picture quality for DVD video, and that it also has issuses with DTS playback. Is this true?

My receive supports DD & DTS. so there should be a problem... right?

I was just wondering if anybody here had this player and has any comments about it?

thanks

I do not have the player, but I have heard great things about it. It would be hard to find a DVD player with that type of functionality at that price. I actually ordered one of those from Amazon, but it took too long to come, so I canceled it.

Apex of course... they play almost anything and they're cheap (for good reason - materials are flimsy).

compare here

yeah and the added bonus is you get a new one every 14 months!

I hate Apex. I have had 3 of them and they keep dieing within 14 months. Not worht the money. Just spend a little more and get a half way decent one.

I just bought my 2nd Apex. First one lasted a little over 3 years. Not too shabby for a $90 unit, which was pretty much the absolute cheapest at the time.
This one is an 1100W I picked up at a pawn shop for $30 (temporary unit that will be passed down to the kids after I get a nicer one that does SACD/DVD-A around December/January).

I have a pioneer DVD, which plays everythign and has an incredible build quality.
The only trouble is it won't play MP3s.
Can't you get a unit that will play everything, including MP3s, has a great build quality, and costs less than $100?

i have the first generation xbox, i modded it a couple years back. The problem with the first gens (well, my 1st gen Neways) is that the DVD_Rom is really picky about what media its reading from.
80% of the media i use is T.Yuden, Its readable but towards the end of the dics my xbox starts to skip.

Thanks for everyones input.

Just buy a name brand, and avoid junk like Apex.

That point can't be emphasized enough.

while apex sucks, they are about the only ones i see producing dvd players with karaoke features. my sis and her friends have karaoke nights, and her apex dvd player quit working...gotta look for a new one with karaoke features.

Most people are going to post which player they have, so I am going to do the same. But mine is really the best!

I sold my Apex 1500 (3 years old, paid 30 or 40 bucks for it 3 years ago) on ebay for $70, then went and bought a Philips 642 at Target for $69 and its awesome.

Get it.

I have 2 years old Apex. Been flawless so far. Plays all my burned DVDs, MP3 CDs, VCDs. For $59 it's great. After I got a progressive scan (harman kardon) dvd player, it now retired to bedroom.
