I'm learning to drive stickshift!

My sister has been itching to teach me how to drive her five-speed RSX for a long time, since it's pretty annoying when I can't take her car to the store or something, if it's parked behind mine. So this weekend we went out three seperate times and I further honed my skills on driving a 5-speed. I've been on a couple lessons but they were just in neighborhoods. This was real-road driving.

I only stalled once in three separate trips on main roads. Overall, I can already see why people say driving manual transmission cars are so much more fun. It feels like I'm so much more in control of the car. My starts are a little rough (some shuddering when I let up the clutch...I just need to find that magic catch point) but I'm really excited.

I can almost picture myself in a Mazda 3 with the 1AB, 1SP and 1XT packages with a 5-speed!

🙂

Well...my sister learned from a guy, so just think of it as being taught by a guy through proxy. 🙂

old news. acura's/honda's have the lightest clutches; it's a joy to drive even in traffic.

Please. Unless you're retarded, you shouldn't have any trouble in traffic. I drove my sister's old school Accord in bumper to bumper when we were going cross country, and that was when I was a noob, and I never had any trouble with it. Hills are the most difficult thing, but we were in the Midwest where hills seem to be nonexistant.

I'll never own anything but a manual unless forced to.

Since when is any manual fun to drive in trafic? Even with a light clutch my 00 Si made me want to shoot myself every time I got stuck in a freeway wreck. It's not so much the clutch as the annoyance of shifting up, down, up, down, neutral, having to give it gas and let off in first gear (never smooth) etc.

I've always had 5 speeds but when I got my truck a while ago I went auto. Convenience is nice plus it's better for wheeling imo.

i got the same model 😀

well - i am sorry you feel that way, i don't mind it at all 🙂

stick stifts are okay for bumper to bumper as long as teh clutch is not too heavy.

I have honed my skills for bumper to bumper. However this weekned on my way down to LA i got stuck and promptly pulled over at westley rest stop for a much needed 2 hr break. The problem - the traffic was moving at a very irregular rate, and plus i didnt want to get back into the freeway knowing that in 1/2 hr i moved only a 1/4 mile.

Anyway good that you learnt how to drive stick, now that you can, learn how to keep the shifts smooth. I try and keep my shifting smooth and you cant tell when im shifting (even in agressive driving sometimes).

The whole traffic scenario is one reason why I am hesitant to buy an '04 S2000, as I have to commute in heavy traffic everyday. And with an engine with little torque you can't cheat by not shifting. Its probably similar in an RSX. Great cars, but not very liveable as a urban daily driver.

bah you americans 🙂

I learned driving when i was 11 years old. Stick shift of course. Considering 97% of the cars in Europe were sticks by then, I didn't have a choice 😉

Eh, maybe if I was in bad traffic all the time (I get stuck in about one or two wrecks a year) it wouldn't have annoyed me so much. It just drove me crazy though. Mostly it was when you're going fast enough to where 1st isn't smooth whenever you have to give it gas or let off but you're going too slow for 2nd. Very irritating. *shrugs*

All in all it's nice car otherwise though

I blew out a clutch when I learned stick at first...good luck, and hope that doesn't happen to you. 😀
