I'm kinda sad to be saying this..but...

Shift 2 Unleashed > Gran Turismo 5.

I really don't understand the hate for the game, it's so well presented and extremely well packaged. The gameplay is super immersive, the experience is very smooth and the graphics, at least on PC, are top of the freaking line. Customization is what really takes it over top though, Gran Turismo just fell dead in water as far as that went.

And while yes, Shift is supposed to be more "arcadish", I think it surpasses Gran Turismo 5 overall as a game. If you're more into the technical settings, Shift 2 does give you some options I haven't looked into a lot, but Forza 4 is still king.

I've been really getting into the game and are hoping EA announces Shift 3 and they improve on it, racing really is the one genre that has stayed true to itself.

That says less about shift than it does about GT5. In a world where forza doesn't exist, shift is the pinnacle of sim racers.

I still just can't get behind a 30FPS racing sim. Forza 4 is superior in almost every way.

I enjoyed Shift 2 for a while. Then I put it away for some time and eventually got Forza 4. The other day I decided to try Shift 2 again (wife was using the TV) and I couldn't play it. There's something messed up about the inputs in that game, like it's lagging or there's a controller deadzone.

Keep in mind - I had ALREADY set up the game's control tweaks with a set someone posted online. I was apparently fine with the controls when I played it before, and I didn't change anything between when I last put it down and when I tried again. It's just after playing Forza 4, I couldn't go back to Shift 2.

I like the way Shift 2 plays, as sort of a hybrid between the car progression model of Forza and GT and the more arcade-like model of previous NFS games. I like the graphics and immersion effects, and I'm not a stickler for absolute realism so I'm okay with it not being a pure racing sim. I just found it unplayable because of the controls.

What's especially weird is I'm much more likely to hate a game, put it down, and then finally give it another try and like it. I don't think it's ever happened where I was fine with a game the first time around and it somehow soured on me later.

Luckily for me I get to play it at 60 😉

I couldn't get past that knocking sound all the time. It sounded like every car threw a rod bearing, and totally ruined the immersion.
I pre-ordered 1 & 2, but just couldn't get into them. Granted, Forza 3 & 4 blew it away.
Kinda sad though that GT5 can't even compete. I thought that was a premiere sim too?

How much time have you spent with GT5? none?

I've been playing GT5 for over a year, I've spent over 100 hours in it.

I own or have owned Grid, Shift 1 & 2 and Forza 3, they don't touch GT5. They are good games, but GT5 is for the love of driving. So much variety to boot, A-spec, B-spec, Rally, night racing, weather, etc.

Last night I spent 45 grueling minute getting my B-spec driver to win at Sarthe, it started over cast and dry and then started raining and slowly went dark and the last lap was dawn. I squeaked a 6sec victory out by having good driver control and pit strategy.

Can't say I have done anything like that in Shift or any other arcade racer that is one part MTV and another part Axe body spray.

GT5 Spec 2.0 is a different game than it was during release. Much has been added and fixed. They conintue to add stuff, new seasonal all the time. That is better than buying a new game every other year.

Don't get me wrong, i LOVE GT5. But sometimes I just found asking myself, why the hell am I still playing this game and how is it I'm driving an Aston Martin against a bunch of Minis?

I'm gonna agree here. Shift 2: Unleashed is probably the superior racing game.

I've never played Forza though, so I'm not sure how it compares.

Most of the races are restricted by HP and weight, sometimes years, class and country. The seasonals use PP to limit you. Shift 1/2 are not driving sims, they are arcade racers and all the cars drive like they are gravel, it gets old after 20 minutes. If I want an arcade game I pop in Motorstorm or Paradise.

Yet it's better packaged for what it is, which is what i'm saying. GT5, even after all these patches, still feels half assed.

I couldn't stand the motion blur of Shift. Does shift 2 Unleashed have the same crap? Is it customizable and can you easily turn it off?

I loved Grid and GT5. Haven't played either in a while. Don't have Forza 4 because I dont have an xbox and my Logitech G25 wheel which works both on PC and PS3 isn't compatible with the xbox (shakes fist)

It's widely considered that Forza is better than GT5. AI hasn't really kept up. They just follow the racing line like a rail. GT5 also requires a lot of grinding to get the money to get the cars you need to win. Difficulty racks up pretty quick to the point where you're racing 400hp+ cars on the last race of the beginner tier.

Sometimes I think the more arcade type racers are more fun.

Oops sorry about the necro. I was doing a search for Grid because I couldn't get it to run. I searched google and here. I finally found a solution on Microsoft's site. It was a secuROM problem. Fixed it and now it works. Looking forward to Grid 2.

Since it's necro'd...can we agree there is something wrong with the way cars handle in both the Shift games?

It feels like they pivot around a central point rather than having 4 separate points of frictional contact between the road and the tires.

GT5 really clicked for me when I got the Logitech DFGT wheel. I bought the game sometime late last summer. Played it a few times a week for a week or two, and then it sat on my shelf. Something about it just wasn't grabbing me.

One of my buddies then got the game earlier this summer, and we'd talk about GT5 while at work, so it kinda renewed my interest. Then, on a whim I bought a DFGT, and it made all the difference in the world. For the next month or two, I was glued to it.

After taking about a week to really get the hang of the wheel, it made the whole experience infinitely better. When you feel every little thing in the wheel, you really get a feel for what line works best for you. There's nothing like trying to get through a turn, as quickly and smoothly as you can, and then feel the total loss of traction in the steering wheel as the rear-end tries to come around, then snap the wheel left or right to save it. It set me back $130, but the wheel definitely got me my money's worth on GT5.

I also have Shift 2 Unleashed. While the sound and damage modeling blows GT5 out of the water, the racing itself felt way too arcadey. I tried it for about 30 minutes and just couldn't get into it. I'll try it again some day, and see if feels a little better to me.
