I'm interviewing tomorrow in New York with a "placing agency"

My question is:

Since I'm going to be in the city, AND in my suit and tie, would it be worth it to bring like 10-20 copies of my resumes and cover letters, and walk around broadway, and drop them off at random "technology" companies that I see? I'd walk in and just hand my resume to the front desk. Is this considered a bad method? Should I just do the interview and leave?

Probably not

It's much easier to deal with resumes submitted through a website. Paper resumes are not searchable. Since there is no specific position you'd be applying for, chances are no one would ever look at it.

um its new york, how you gonna pick companies by walking pass one?
just get it done and go home, or walk in the city.

what you described is good, giving resumes to as many companies as possible. but keep it on the intarweb

Most of the time, tech companies don't have any advertising on the building because the building most likely contains many offices. I don't think it would be particularly easy to find any to drop your resume at. I would just interview and leave before rush hour.

Note the name of companies you see and either mail or e-mail a resume to human resources.

OK .. and one more question.

I just tried my suit on and realized.... damn... its a little big on me. The pants don't look so bad... but the jacket is huge. This is because I've lost about 30 pounds in the past 3 months.... too late to go get a new one.

Should I just tell the person I'm interviewing with "Sorry this look so big, I recently lost 30 pounds and I didn't realize it would be so big on me" ?

Stick to NJ, there's plenty of companies to work for in NJ without having to deal with traffic going into Manhattan. And don't limit yourself to tech companies, any large company will have an IT department.

Don't do that.

If I were interviewing you, I'd think that's strange.

And it will call attention to it.

mugs: But I want to do UNIX/linux/php/mysql/perl/cgi/shell scripting/html/css, etc. I can't seem to find any companies looking for someone like that in North Jersey.

mugs: I'm interested in something in the 287 area, that's where I want to move back to.... my family lives there and most of my friends live there. Know of any companies in that area I could send my resume to with people who would be interested in someone with my experience? I'd be interested in at least 55-60K

I'm looking out my office window at 287 right now. :D But I'm more central NJ than north Jersey. I'm in Bridgewater. You might try looking at Accenture or any of the many pharmaceutical companies we have in NJ.
