I'm installing a pull up bar.

Washers typically go between the "head" of the screw and the "thing" that you are screwing them into.

I'm willing to bet it's in the frame of a doorway. But that's just an educated guess.

yes it's in the doorway...is that bad? the wall is not dry wall...this is a solidly built old house. (duplex) and they pretty much didn't use dry wall back then. comparing it to my aunt's doorframes (definitely new and dry wall,_they are nothing similar. ) feels and looks like solid wood
edit: there are also mounting brackets
