I'm in the mood for a pistol. What should I go look at?

Like it says. If YOU were goin to get 1 pistol, what would you go look at? For general use / fun / home defense / bank robberies.

Ok, scratch that last one :D

Seriously though. THinking of GLock or Sig right now. Anything else I should consider?

i'm not a big gun fan, but if i were to buy myself a gun for self-defense/security purposes, it would probably be a semi-auto 9mm or .45, or maybe even smaller if i couldn't handle it. for those like myself who aren't out to put gaping holes in people, even a tiny little revolver will work decently. for home defense, i guarantee you even a little peashooter will stop a raging psychopath. even if this intruder is wearing kevlar, i'm sure he won't just be able to shrug off a coupla bullets in the chest, no matter how small the caliber.

Zug, I appreciate the input, but your not quite so close. A small peashooter is asking for trouble. 9 mm is the SMALLEST I would adivse for home defense / personal protection. If your in a situation you *need* to use it, you want stopping power. Even 9mm is a bit small to really be trustworthy, although I sure as hell wouldnt wanna be shot by one, and they will get the job done nicely. And with body armor, I'd want the biggest hand cannon I could find. A raging maniac in Kevlar is a BAD BAD thing to have in your house. At that point I'd be grabbin the rifle.

Anyways, again i appreciate the input.

Forget Sig, go with Heckler & Koch. The USP line is very nice, and available in 9mm, .40 S&W, and .45 ACP. There is also a USP Compact line, if you plan on using it as a regular concealed carry pistol.

I love Springfield Armory guns. They own.

I have a Springfield Armory V10 Ultra Compact .45acp I love it, best firearm I've ever shot.

My brother has a Springfield Armory 10mm (can't remember the model) It's silver and a real beauty, also shoots very well.

H&K .40 isnt bad either. I don't like Glocks, dont prefer the trigger/safety and whatnot.

Just my .02

I really like my Sig P220...so, of course, I'd recommend a Sig...but when you're considering all high quality firearms, the deciding factor is generally personal...can't go wrong if you're willing to pay for quality.

In retrospect, I probably would have gotten a DAO version...

I am a big fan of Ruger Firearms. Not because I can attest to the quality of their handguns, but rather to the fact that I am a shareholder and get a nice dividend every quarter from them. :D

Regardless, I wouldn't mind owning this little baby

My vote is for Glock. I have a model 22 (full size) and model 27 (compact).
Both are .40 caliber. Also they have a model 23 is a .40 that is sized between the 22 and 27.

You really just need to go to a shop, and hold a few of them. Get an idea for the size and balance that fits you the best. For instance, that Walther mentioned above is horrible for me. My sister has that pistol, and when I squeeze the trigger the barrel points up because my hand is too big.

Ruger, Sig, and Browning are my favorites to shoot. A glock is a nice option, too.

Even better, find an indoor range that will rent you a pistol to shoot, and try several out.

I know that some of the Bass Pro Shops will let you do this. The one in Gurnee, IL did as of last summer.
