I am looking for a new HD.

300GB minimum.
My mobo supports SATA or ATA100

I almost always had Segate HD because I find them silent.

But since I have been out of the hardware loop for while, I wonder if Seagate is still a good value ?

Any other suggestions ? Silent is a must.

Look in the Hot Deals forum. Always good deals coming and going. Now a days all of the quality manufacturers have fairly quiet HDDs, but if you are really that picky then check out SPCR (they review HDDs right?).

The seagate 320gb 7200.10 barracuda is currently $90 @newegg, OEM. Pretty good value and the best performing 7200rpm hdd right now. The samsung spinpoints are probably quieter, but I don't think they make on with a 16mb buffer. Definetly check them out though... SATA is generally cheaper b/c they have instant/mail in rebates on them. No one bothers to put rebates on PATA hdd's b/c they are old technology. It's like ddr2 vs. ddr (minus the compatability complications... maybe not the greatest analogy) In any case, you probably have more SATA ports anyway, so why not get SATA. Save the IDE port for an optical drive.

All I can find is SATA 2 or SATA 3.0 GB/S

If im not mistaken, these are not compatible with SATA 1.5gb/s ?

Also, nice suggestion with newegg, but im from Canada.

SATA 2 or SATA 3.0 GB/S are backward compatible with SATA 1 or SATA 1.5 GB/S systems.

Good Luck

Ohh, canda huh? Keep pressuring newegg to ship to canada. It's a worthwhile cause, albeit a futile one... :p
You are mistaken actually, sata 2 and sata 3gb/s are backwards compatible with sata 1.5 gb/s. They will just run @ 1.5gb/s.

EDIT: PurdueRy, you posted at the exact same time as me with the same response... :p

SATA2 HD will adapt to a motherboard with SATA ?
or
SATA2 mobo will accept SATA HD ?

Yep, both are true. And at Hot Deals you can usually find 250GB drives going for $50.
