I'm in motherboard hell

I want to run an AMD 2500+ 333FSB and 512x2 pc3200 RAM. Probably a little overclocking later on.
I was going to run the 8RDA+, but I keep on reading all these horror stories. I want something that is reilable, 6USB, onboard LAN, IDE: 2x channel ATA133. RAM: 3x 184-pin DDR PC3200, Slots: 1x AGP (Pro/8X), 3x PCI (or more), 2xPS2, 4xUSB, 1xCOM,1xLPT, and Audio Ports,Onboard Audio

Help me pick one. Cost is an issue, want something $100+/-
Also something where I don't have to buy the crazy expensive lowlatency pc3200 would be good.

You'll still hear horror stories no matter which brand you select. I've had no problems w/ any of the three nforce2 boards I bought (Abit, Epox, MSI). There are small issues here and there but overall, my experience w/ nforce2 boards has been much more satisfactory than any VIA boards I've used in the past.

Having said that, if you're looking for under $100, do consider Epox or Soltek. The spec. requirements you've listed is pretty much standard in most nforce2 boards. In addition, if you're planning to OC, don't expect any miracle from using generic RAM regardless of which nforce2 board you use. I hardly doubt that a particular brand mb favors the use of generic RAM over the other brands when it comes to overclocking.

Yeah, not really talking about the real cheap stuff. I wanted to run Corsair XMS or Kingston Hyper X (like $90/ 512stick) I just cannot afford the suff that is $100++/stick

problem is you're running AMD systems 🙂 If you went Intel maybe less trouble? heh

had to add that little jab

sorry, did not make my actual question very clear. I decided on some RAM I liked earlier. I'm looking for a $100 mobo that will take some regular high quality RAM without to much fuss.
which mobo should I go with

You can't go wrong with offerings from Epox and Soltek (under $100) or Abit and Asus (above $100). As mentioned earlier, the features that you want is basically universal in all nforce2 boards. Some of the extra features are RAID, Serial ATA and an extra network port in the more expensive boards.

Thanks for all the replies.
So will this be a safe set-up?

Epox 8RDA+

AMD athlon xp 2500+

I want to order tommorow, so I just want to double check before I spend the $$

God you worry too much !! 😉 That would be an excellent set up and would even let you overclock quite a bit.

yeah, my first time doing this sort of thing so I'm a little nervous

every mobo has it's problems. Just pick from one of the big three Nforce2 boards: Asus, Abit, or Epox and you will do just fine.
