My Digital Rebel XTi arrived today.
All those with a photography background prepare for an onslaught of frenzied questions. :)

Original thread.
I chose the Canon over the Sony mostly because of the easier availabilty of lenses.

Who cares about the body; what lenses do you have?

So far just the kit lens.
I will be getting a macro shortly.
This is a new world to me.
I intend to thoroughly explore it. :)

I tried an older Sigma (for Canon) lens and it gave me an err99. :(

Congrats! Go out and have some fun with it. :) Just start shooting and trying different things...read over the manual, even if you don't know what it's talking about...just to give you an idea of whats available. Then try some things that look cool to you...or that you are wondering about. That's the best way to learn about the camera in my opinion.

That's precisely what I intend to do. :)

No surprise there. It can be very hit and miss with 3rd party lenses. Stick to Canon and you'll be pleased.

I disagree. I've used plenty of 3rd party lenses...have run into the error maybe three times, and all three times i turned the cam off, turned it back on and it was good to go.

The Presence, try cleaning the contacts of the older lens...but it may be that that particular lens (because its older) isn't compatible with that body.

< Never used anything but Canon lenses; never seen the error.

I agree it's easy to fix, but come on. Plus, I said it can be hit and miss.

This is common, the lenses needs a CPU swap. Here in Canada if you talk to the Gentec repair department just right they'll do it free of charge. I'm not sure what the deal is in the US.

You'll see the error at some point. It's almost inevitable. And why come on? So you have to take a millisecond to turn off the cam and turn it back on? Sorry that's too much time out of your day. saying not to bother with anything with canon is naive. Some 3rd party lenses are great for a fraction of the cost of canon.

Sure, i'd love to be able to afford L glass...who wouldn't that shoots canon? but 3rd party lenses can be great choices.

QFT, There are some great 3rd party lenses. Since you're looking at macro take a serious look at the Tamron 90mm Macro, it's a great lens for the money.
