What would stop you from opening a Yahoo email account or one of the bazillion other free webmail services out there?

Well, not through yahoo, msn or gmail...

I can't use the company email server to sent...

let's say the incoming and outgoing is this:

mail.anandtech.com

The mail just bouces back to me...

maybe company E-mail server just blocks every address except certain addresses? They probably don't want employee blowing through their bandwith (and time) sending non-work related mails.

All that I've read about China's Internet makes it sound more like an intranet than anything. Heavily censored, and outside access is restricted to what the government will allow. I'd advise against trying to bypass government implemented security measures - dealing with an pissed off network administrator is one thing. Dealing with a pissed off law enforcement officer is something else.
