I'm impressed with Opera 11 on Ubuntu 11.04

Just a quick thumbs up for Opera 11 over older 10.63 version on Ubuntu 11.04,it is a lot faster then previous version,I also have it on Win7 but speed difference on Windows is not as great.

Its worth a try if you have not tried it,remember 11 version now has extensions,I have only tried the weather one, google map one is broken on both Linux and Windows but thats more the developer's fault for Google maps then Opera.

Btw I also have Opera 11 installed on my laptop which has 10.10 version of Ubuntu, again has speed improvements.

Is there anything that might make me want it over Chrome (on any platform)? I know the draw firefox has over chrome is the extensions, but I've never messed with Opera before, I know nothing.

It has a ton of features built in, and the speed is between Firefox and Chrome. I prefer Firefox, but Opera is my second favorite.

I was a long term Firefox user but went back to Opera about 3 months ago, I was amazed how much faster it is over Firefox and how things have improved with Opera.

Chrome is ok if you want a basic fast browser but both Firefox and Opera let you do so much more with customization and extensions (I know Chrome has some extensions)to name a few.

Yeah I tried it on Windows and like it as well.

I'm used to Firefox though. It would take a lot to get me to switch.

I have the layout on Opera similar to how my Firefox use to be ,only big difference really is speed and choice of extensions at the moment but that should change down the road as more extensions become available for Opera.

Extensions are easy to install, it really is click on install button all done in most cases ,their forums are pretty good too.
What extensions are available below.

I'm impressed with it on Mint linux as well.

Download the deb file and used dpkg -i since Mint haven't update the repository yet.

Opera is actually faster than chrome in a couple tests (Opera 11 uses a lot of improvements from the 10.70 snapshots. They canceled 10.70 and wrapped it into 11). They tend to trade blows. On top of that you get a lot more built in usability. It has a built in email client, no script, adblock, torrent client, irc client etc. Thats all before extensions.

Honestly a lot of the extensions are GUI front ends for built in Opera features right now but I imagine they will improve greatly over time.

It is definitely impressive but not enough to get my to switch from Firefox or Chrome. I don't like how Xmarks was implemented either.

Funny you should mention Xmarks...

Xmarks was bought by LastPass in December 2010.

As of 30-Jan-2011, you won't be able to sync passwords using Xmarks,

Personally, I could care less, because I run my own Xmarks server locally. I'll just pin the current version, e.g. won't update the Xmarks add-on in Fx.

Bottom line: LastPass devs don't want to maintain the same features in two different apps, so everyone will probably end up migrating from Xmarks to LastPass anyway.

IMO, Chrome is still the one to beat.

I'm currently using (in order of preference):
  1. Google Chrome
  2. Mozilla Firefox
  3. Midori
  4. Opera

The thing that I h-a-t-e about Opera 11 is their bookmark implementation.

In my experience, it's been impossible to import & export bookmarks to/from other browsers. Plus, while I can sort the bookmarks using their bookmark editor, they don't stay sorted on the menus (sidebar or top).

While it's not a bad browser, I find the bookmark feature to be extremely irritating!

I don't care about or desire password sync but if they get kill free bookmark sync, I'll have to try running a server. Thanks for the tip.

Its too bad because its nice to have a cross-platform and cross-browser bookmark syncing service.

Just to let you guys know Opera 11.01 version is out for both Linux and Windows, nice so far on my Ubuntu/Win7 PCs.

Btw I hate Firefox 4 beta ,I don't like how tabs are always on top of browser(I prefer it on bottom).

You're weird :^D

That would drive me nuts having the tabs on the bottom. Well, as long as you're happy :^)

That's the beauty of Opera, you can have it on top or bottom, left side or right side,so everybody's happy 😉.

Actually, that doesn't look so bad. LoL! 😀

I think I'll leave it that way, for a while...

Nice to hear Mem. Hopefully Opera can start to do even better soon with its addons increasing as well! I always loved the underdog.
