How quiet is it really? I'm running a passive 4350 in my HPTC and that, combined with the single 120mm and the quiet OCZ cpu cooler, makes it hard to hear from more than ~2 feet away. I want to be able to occasionally game with the PC (mainly lan stuff like CS:S, TF2, LFD, etc...) but I don't want more noise, at least not on idle. I don't mind if the fan spins up when playing.

I have heard good things about the XFX black edition 6850/6870 but I really like the price of the 460's. Anyone have any comparisons of these cards vs passive setups at idle?

The reference cards are nearly silent. This HardOCP review of the Galaxy card suggests that it is not: http://www.hardocp.com/article/2010/07/12/nvidia_geforce_gtx_460_review/8

"In short, the reference design GTX 460 video cards we tested were dead silent. The Galaxy GeForce GTX 460 1GB video card, on the other hand, was not. From the moment we plugged it in, the fan was whiny and loud. And when we fired up FurMark, or any 3D game, it only got worse. Not only was it audible over the other system fans, it was audible over the speakers, and even the office pedestal fan. So while Galaxy has perfected cooling, they have a ways to go to reducing the noise level compared to the reference fan."

Thanks for the link, guess I'm passing on the Galaxy 460.

Out of curiosity, what is wrong with the 5850 you have in your HTPC?

Thanks.

You get what you pay for I guess. I just hate the fact that it is so expensive to get a quiet card. I'm paying about $30 more for the MSI version, but I would rather have a quiet 4830 than a loud GTX 460, so I have no real choice here. A loud card like this(and I've purchased them before) is just useless.

Other reviews:

Also, the fan on the Galaxy is card is louder than I would have liked and I wonder if this is because it had to be a bit smaller to fit in the housing form factor than other third-party cooler designs? That might not be the case, and in reality the fan isn't THAT much louder than the competition, but it is noisier than the reference or Palit cards we have tested.

The Galaxy offering is a fair bit nosier than a lot of our other offerings. From the second we turned the system on we could tell it was more audible even at idle.
Tweak Town

These results indicate that the cooling design used by Galaxy is capable of what we asked from it. It is not the quietest cooling solution available but it does the job maintaining decent temperatures even after 30 minutes of Furmark.

Good compilation. And yes, if I were you, I'd jump for the MSI Cyclone for $120 as well, (partly due to dual rebate anxiety though): http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814127512

I got the MSI TwinFrozr II for $125.

It is a pretty big price difference though. Both were $150, I had to pay $12 tax at newegg and there is $4 shipping at TD. Newegg comes out to $162-25 = $137 whereas this is 154-60=$94. So there is a $43 price difference for the MSI. I also have a $10 coupon for circuit city(same as TD, so that makes the cyclone $144 and $84 after rebate. It is really tempting to go with it, especially since it will be cheaper even before the rebate.

For the difference in price, I could hook up an Arctic Cooling Freezr to the Galaxy.
