I'm having problems installing the heatsink on 2 diff mobos

Well, I'm working on a new build right now, and I figured some non-stock cooling might be nice to have. So, I purchased the Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro on the internet. It's supposed to fit LGA775, and I'm running an LGA775 processor. When I went to install it, I found that the black and white plastic pins to secure it seemed to be too far apart. I can only ever get two in at the same time (they both have to be on the same side) and if I push one from the opposite side in, the pin diagonal from it comes back out. So, I tried it again with the stock heatsink/fan and had the exact same problem.

I returned the motherboard, as it was a cheapo one, and bought another, highly rated, more expensive one. The only problem is, I'm having the same exact problem. I find it highly unlikely that I got two bad motherboards. Is there a common problem, or something known I might be doing wrong?

Some aftermarket coolers have their own mounting brackets that need to be used in place of the ones that are on the board. Check to see if you have those, if not you may be missing them from your package
